Define "extended period"?

I think it just means to vary your speed, start - stop, use the brakes etc. as compared to getting in the car and setting the cruise control for 65 and driving 600 miles - which I have known people to do with less than favorable results. Other than maybe an interstate road trip most driving ends up pretty variable.

We picked up a brand-new Lexus the day before we were leaving on a 2,500 mile road trip. Fortunately, we were leaving Tucson and heading northeast to the mid-Atlantic area so we did a lot of 'variable' driving, especially on the first few days using secondary roads through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc. If you're going to get anywhere out West, you have to drive long, hard and fast ... we tried to hold it to no more than 50 MPH, but that didn't last long.
By the time we got to our destination, our Lexus was well broken-in and we saw no adverse effects, but we traded it at about 45,000 miles. Perhaps the vehicle's "last owner" may wonder why it burns too much oil!
