Upgrading tires to something larger?

you put a 285 tire on our 7.5" wide rim . NOT cool pal. Sidewall failure and high probability of accident driving around with this set up. What tire store let you put this on? I dont even want to explain. This was discussed to death on the 4runner forum regarding the narrow 20 inch rims on the limited (7 inches wide mind you) and people putting 275 profile tires on them. I highly advise people here reading this to NOT do this. 285 tires need wider rims, and you cant use the gx stock rims for this.

Yep. I did. I'd do it again too.
Just as many folks on the 4Runner forum already have.
This has been done with pickup trucks and SUVs alike in my area for a long, long time. I won't go into all the reasons and justifications.

tires look great on there; its' what they should have come with to begin with, along with a slightly lower axle ratio to make up for the height. then you'd have your gas mileage back.
don't worry about the width of tire and wheel. i'm sure you know, a lot of off road guys use a narrower wheel to help keep the tire on it if htey can't run beadlocks.
for that matter, a lot of diesel guys run 315's on their stock 6.5" wide wheels. I haven't heard of a problem yet.

I also plan on using a taller tire (1.2" more than stock in overall diameter). How does the stock transmission gearing ratio behave with your new tires?
Aside from mpg impacts, do you see any noticeable difference in engine RPM behavior? Also, how about braking feel and performance?
