There was issue with 2007-2010 Toyota FJ Cruisers in which Toyota initially recommended premium fuel for the vehicle. Members of the FJ forum began hassling Toyota about the reason for this since the Tacomas and 4Runners used the same engine but used regular fuel. Toyota eventually sent out an e-mail stating that FJ Cruisers for those model years would have no issues using regular fuel.

That being said, I have always used premium fuel in my 2007 FJ Cruiser. There are members of the FJ forums that use regular fuel, but noted a decrease in engine performance and power loss. It's not significant since some FJ owners can live with that, but it is noticeable. I'd rather use my engine's full potential.

Ever wonder why 2010 and 2011 RX350 recommended (not required) Premium but 2012+ RX350 recommends Regular? Same for the ES line.

The 4.7L in the GX470 is the same as the 4.7L in the Tundra and 4Runner but the Lexus asks for Premium while the Totoya asks for Regular. Same thing as 4.6L in Lexus and 4.6L in the Tundra.

Premium MAY help the engine running smoother and Lexus wants its customers to feel that way (at the customer's expense).
engines may physically be same, but they are tuned differently

Default Is our gx engine compatible with 15% ethanol fuel

saw something on the news saying govt may mandate higher ethanol levels for gas and that it may damage engines and manufacterers will void warranty.

sorry. found answer. NO.

No, I think it's only rated for 10%.

Lightbulb Fuel Questions - Premium or Regular

I wanted to get some feedback as to whether any of you have used regular unleaded (87), premium (89), super (91) or super plus (93) with your GX's or similar models?

Have you noticed a difference between either? The manual calls for premium but the gas tank cover only shows not to use low grade (85).

I currently use 91 but wondered if anyone uses any other grades and if there's any difference in mileage or performance.

The car will just become less powerful to prevent knocking if you use lower fuel. It shouldn't hurt anything, but who wants less power?

They recommend premium gas. .. But incase if you can't find any gas station with it , it is okay to use 85 grade but not recommend .

You meant "unleaded". Like other members said, you will feel some power lost. The knock sensor will adjust. Personally, I would use what ever grade the car manufacturer recommended. I use premium (91) on my 2006 IS350 and the wife's 2013 RX350 uses Regular (87).
what the gas cap indicates is DO NOT use E85 (gasoline with 15% ethanol). That is a complete different type/grade of gas
