Motor Trend Comparison of GX 460 vs. LR4 and GL 450
#4
I saw the video on the internet and the GX is the winner in my opinion. They did make some good points about the cargo space being too small. They did say that the towing weight was about 600 lbs less than the LR4 but that is not a big deal. Overall, the GX has a better intergrated system of gps, entertaintment, and HVAC. The history of realibility is very important, hand down Lexus is the winner. The Benz and Rover has had a long history war stories of leaks and problems. Even with the Toyota/Lexus recalls they have the best history of realiability. Saftey, the Lexus is the winner of the group with 10 airbags and the long list of electronic aids that the competion does not have. The GX is a great car but Lexus does not live up the the motto of "The Pursuit of Perfection". The GX should have 4 cameras and the terrain settings of the Canadian model. The rear door should be a powered lift gate, NO EXCUSES. One area that the LR4 and GL exceedes at is the 3rd row. The GX has the least leg room of the group and it is a weakness that might push a buyer to the GL or LR4. The 2nd row seat in the GX needs to fold and flip to allow access to the third row. It is too narrow to get in the car. I recently became aware of the materials in the GX, the headliner is soft and the plastic scratches too easy. Great test against that LR4 and GL, I hope that Lexus takes notes of the GL's weakness' and make some imporvements in the future.

Another interesting point in the video is they bashed the Benz for it's price... The Benz was a loaded model that topped out at 68K. The GX460 was a base model @ 57K, but a loaded GX460 tops out at the SAME 68K. I bet if Lexus gave them a 68K GX460 premium they would be even more shocked at the price. Another point from the video is that the reviewers noted that one of the good points of the LR4 is the split tailgate. I wonder how much they didn't like the swinggate of the GX.

The GL450 they tested was $68k, but it was not fully loaded. In fact, it didn't even include leather seats.
I considered the GL450 before purchasing the GX 460 Premium.
The sticker for the GX 460 Premium with NAV/ML/RSES is $64,470. For a comparably equipped GL450, the sticker price is $76,565.
That's a significant price difference!
I bet if MB gave them the $76k GL450 they would have been even more shocked at the price.

Base GX gets the job done!!!
The fact that they tested with a base GX460 speaks volumes.
Yes a Premium GX460 tops out in the 68k range but considering what a base is capable of is impressive indeed.
For sake of discussion an AMG GL will set you back around 95k when said and done...This was a "get it done" test.
My GX is equiped exactly as the test vehicle.
You can go crazy with options but at 57k the base GX460 is a steal considering what it is capable of the test proves it.
I opted for the base for this very reason M/T validated my perspective...loving my GX more everyday!

They dinged the GL450 not only on it's price, but also on it's limited off-road capabilities.

3rd Row
We're looking into either a GX470 or the new GX460 (I personally can't get past the swing gate) to replace our RX for the 3rd row, and MB/LR are not even on our radar as candidates to replace the RX. We've enjoyed too much of the "perfect" reliability to risk going to any of the other two.
Also, Indian Jones in Sheetmetal or something like that? Yeah, in the beginning, but after a few years of ownership, more like Indiana Jones dad in Depends. And look at the numbers, both need over 30 hp more to the GX's 301hp to get to 60mph at the same or slightly quicker time.

I had my GX 470 for four years and kind of got used to it.
I've had my GX 460 for 3 months now, and I've found the pop-up window in the back to be very useful since most of the time I'm only loading small items and groceries.
It's not a power liftgate, but it is an improvement over what I had before.

You might want to check out the new Infiniti QX that will be out in July. It will have 400 HP. I don't know what the tailgate will be like, but I doubt it will be a swing gate. I'm going to keep my GX, but will take the Infiniti for a test drive...

The 4.6L is more than powerful enough; in Japan the very same engine is used to power the big-daddy Land Cruiser, and keep in mind that SUV is heavier than the GX. Of the Japanese car reviews that I've read/watched, no one is complaining that the LC is underpowered and/or sluggish.

Did anyone else notice in the pictures that they removed the running boards from the Lexus for the test? I suspect they figured the running boards would be damaged in the off road part of the test.
I would like to see Lexus offer a set of replacement rocker covers without running boards so you could get rid of them and still have it look good.
