Two tire questions...one lift question
I would like to put new, off-road tires on my '09 GX 470 and have these questions. (I'm very new to the whole off-road thing - please forgive my ignorance):
1. I love the look of M/T tires vs A/T, but are they okay in the wet? (Not a lot of fine tread). I found this pic online...
2. What's the maximum tire size that fit stock wheels, and would going with aftermarket wheels enable a larger size tire, (along with heat treating/ cutting the wheel wells)?
3. It may be too difficult to tell, but is the GX in the above pic lifted? (Maybe those tires are much bigger than they look?)
Thanks all!

Depends on the tire. I run goodyears and they are good in the rain and snow. Trade off is they are noisy.
Largest tire without a lift would be 265/70/17. Some people have claimed a 285 will fit without a lift but I'm not able to confirm that. I run a 285/70/17 on my truck but installed them at the same time I did the suspension lift. Anything larger than stock will require some trimming of plastic. If I recall correctly, to fit the 265/70/17 I had to trim the running boards slightly. The 285's required some additional trimming when they were installed. I run a wheel spacer with stock wheels and the running is minimal now.

Most 265/70/17 will fit, but there are some that will rub. I have **** Cepek Fun Country 265/70/17 and they rubbed against the running board when turning. You can see the difference from a stock tire, post #55 https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/coo....904659/page-3

Rz500, that looks badass man! So you aren't sure that 285/70/17 will work even with trimming? That is what I wanted to upgrade to without lifting. What if I just used wheel spacers?

285/70/17 will be a tight fit without a lift. Other members have said they will fit but im sure it would rub like crazy. Even with a 3"+ lift and a bunch of trimming mine still rub.

Be ready for the loud hum with mud tires. It really destroys the nice ride of the GX as far as im concerned. I would just get A/T ties with an aggressive looking sidewall and good wheels.

I just stopped at a local tire shop, and for the BFG AT 285/70/17, it's $266/tire mounted, balanced, all that. Sound reasonable?
