So I called my local dealer (Lexus of Cool Springs) in Nashville, TN because I wanted to get a quote on timing belt service. I'm at 120,000 miles currently.

He quoted me $786.00 and I was pretty surprised at that so I asked him if that included all the belts, pulleys etc that are changed with that and he said no that only includes the belt. He said they will check other stuff but usually they only have to replace the belt. Does this sound right to all of you? I've only had the vehicle a few months but I was under the impression all the stuff related to timing had to replaced with the belt.

While the belt is the only thing "needed" typically, it's viewed as a good time for other problematic parts in the area that will cost an arm and a leg later to replace vs the cheap add-on at this point. Typically you add in the pulley and water pump...

When a timing belt snaps, often times it's something like the water pump seizing or a bearing on a pulley seizing up. The belt itself rarely breaks simply from age, so I think it makes sense to do everything while you are in there, especially since a full timing belt kit with water pump is like $160, at least if you buy a Aisin, which is the OEM.

Truthfully, my guess is 99% of the time the people that just put on the timing belt end up being fine until the next time around, but if it were my car and I were planning on keeping it, I'd pay the extra and just do the entire kit.

I agree with Brad.

I would go ahead and swap out the tensioners, water pump, serpentine, hoses and thermostat while you already have it apart for peace of mind.

I also did the fan clutch on mine. You're already there and it's only $80 (DIY)

I too did the fan clutch, seemed like a wise idea at the time.

Always do the waterpump, its stupid not to. They just want it to break so you will have to come back and spend thousands when you bend your valves.
Also do all the tensioners, etc... basically what Yackowski said.
Fan clutch lasts a very long time, no need to do the fan clutch.

Just an update on this subject. My 09 GX was going in this morning for timing belt at 121,000 Miles. The water pump had a leak so that ended up being a no brainer. I also had them check suspension because it seemed the truck had a slight lean to the right occasionally (they checked and said all was fine). I had them check occasional clunking driveshaft issue and they could not replicate it but said they would remove it and lube. They said it looked fine though.

They recommended I change all fluids (trans, diff, etc) soon but I'll wait a bit on that and they recommended I chance spark plugs which are originals (at dealership? no thanks)

In and out right about $1,000 with oil change.

Bought the Asin kit, Toyota fluids,oil,spark plugs and serp belt, radiator(mine was leaking) plus labor at a reputable shop and I'm at 600-ish. In the shop was we speak.
