Default Best timing belt kit to order for 2006

I am new here and have researched the forum for best answer but still not satisfied. What is the consensus of this forum group on which timing belt kit to order for a 2006 model. Do you need to replace all the seals that come with some kits or is that overkill. My Gx has 137,00 miles. Thanks again.

This is a good kit. Has the tensioner, two idler bearings, and water pump which are all a must in my opinion when changing the belt.

The above kit is the same one I got, although from a different seller. It's complete with everything being quality OEM parts. Had it installed last week by my Indy mechanic, only parts he would have added to the kit which I purchased from him are the thermostat and drive belt.

Mine charged me $400. Ended up being $500 with him replacing the thermostat and drive belt while he had it apart.

Newbie question
Should I plan to change thermostat and drive belt ahead of time or wait for my mechanic to recommend the change ?

I'd plan for it and buy the parts in advance, would have saved me about $50 over what he charged me for the parts and you definitely want to go ahead and change those two parts while he's already in there.

Change the t-stat for sure while it's apart as you'll lose coolant if you choose to do it at a later date. The accessory belt can be done whenever really, but it's got to come off to do the timing belt/water pump job, so there's really zero additional labor you should be charged.

Adding a link to thermostat assembly (part no 7) …looking at this explained why it made sense to change this part right now!

5. Water pump
6. Gasket
7. Thermostat

Gurus,

Any recommendations on which thermostat or drive belt to buy ?

First, this site has be a huge help for me since buying my GX two years ago. So, thanks to everyone... the information here is much appreciated.

I'm having to replace my secondary air pump in my '05 and since it involves pulling off the manifold to do so, I'm also having the starter replaced since it sits right next to the pump. Mine has 170k on the ODO and the belt was changed at around 95k. Would it make sense to have the belt replaced at the same time while the shop is tearing it apart for the air pump/starter fix? Or are the two things different enough that it wouldn't matter in terms of cost?

Your question about the seals. If they are leaking, no brainer! But you cant look at a seal and tell if its going to last 1 day or 100k more miles. When I get my stuff done, my motto is DO IT! Since they are in there. You dont want oil on your new belt. My history says my water pump was replaced, there is a sticker for the belt. I would think Lexus would do the low ball scam or be upfront and say, You are going to need seals, pulleys tensioner, rollers, EVERYTHING! Its a big service, cheaper than a new engine or fixing a broken 1

Also consider replacing the drive belt tensioner pulley while you are putting everything back together. Mine went out at 103k. Toyota and Lexus will not sell the pulley separate from the tensioner assembly, but the OEM is actually Dayco. Advance Auto Parts sells the Dayco brand tensioner (where Oreally's sells Gates brand - the Gates sells a separate pulley but it does not fit the OEM tensioner). With a coupon code online I get the entire tensioner assembly for $40. I just replaced the pulley as my tensioner works fine. Threw the tensioner assembly and old original pulley on the shelf for another day. You can source a new bearing for the old pulley and press it in for very cheap. Now you have a spare or a cheap new part to sell/give to a buddy.
