YES you can get PRADO in Diesel
True but they dont really need to sell the GX to sell the Prado elsewhere. They can simply take that away if they wanted to, and their Prado Dev costs and solid profit could be picked up by the other markets that love the prado

I tow a 17 foot boat with mine and the door clears the trailer winch stand. So it is not always the case that it is an issue.

I agree the rear door is an incredibly stupid design that could have easily been redone. Especially on a high end luxury SUV, the idea they left it there for cost cutting is absurd.

Just very awkward in a lot situations when you need to load the rear.

My guess is CAFE standards. The new fuel economy requirements are going to be nearly impossible to meet (54.5 mpg) Large, heavy duty SUVs are going to be a thing of the past unless the standards are relaxed.

All the automakers are going to be making car-based, soccer mom CUV's with 3rd rows and vehicles like the GX are probably going to be axed.

What a gimmick.
I've had 2 Toyotas with the roll down back glass (1st gen DC Tundra and now 2nd gen Sequoia). I don't think it's a gimmick at all. It's came in handy quite a few times.

As far as maintenance, none to speak of. The glass has never rattled and has never needed constant attention. Sounds like you had a POS vehicle.

Never had a rattle on my 07 4runner or had to maintain. It might be the case with GX460 kind a rear glass just guessing not really sure. Or may be that particular vehicle was rear ended and never got fixed properly.

The old 2nd gen 4Runners had some issues with the rear windows, made worse by the fact you had to roll down the rear window any time you wanted to open the rear tailgate, but those are 21+ year old trucks at this point. My '96 HIlux Surf was the same as a 3rd gen 4Runner, and the rear window always worked flawlessly. I LOVED being able to tilt up the sunroof and crack the rear window for some airflow with very little noise and turbulence, I miss that feature the most by far from my Surf.

Default GX 460 rear door....

Just purchased a used 2011 GX 460 and yes the direction of open for rear door is wrong. If you park on the street USA and have to get something from the back I would much rather stand on the curb side which is far more logical. That being said, I am glad that the rear glass does open upward to allow access to items in the back.

You've posted in the 1st gen GX470 section, there's a 2nd gen GX460 forum as well where you'll find others with your model. Enjoy your new truck!

The demographic Lexus usually appeals to does not park on the street to unload cargo. They park in a heated garage. The driver gets out to go to Starbucks and then to the occasional mah jong game, and then to pick up the kids from private school.

The Prado in its basic form is the overland vehicle designed by Toyota. The GX470, while it's an awesome vehicle that is definitely underrated, was designed for the niche luxury market and not as a luxury 4-wheeler here in the states.

I guess few people have realized that Toyota modeled the GX/Prado after the Land Rover Discovery... The similarities are so obvious I don't understand why more people don't realize this.

Just to infuriate you some more, Toyota does sell the Prado with a rear glass that opens in other markets

Also this design IMO is a lot easier to use and you can still mount a spare tire on the back of the truck.

The GX460 rear glass does open, it's the GX470 that doesn't
