Wireless luxury from Nokia, Lexus
By: Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 8th April 2003, 10:41 GMT

Nokia and Lexus yesterday announced the availability of the Lexus Integrated Phone System, an optional mobile communications solution that allows owners of select Lexus vehicles and a Nokia 6310i phone to seamlessly integrate the phone into their Lexus audio/navigation system. The Lexus Integrated Phone System is available for buyers of new 2003 Lexus SC 430, LX 470, GS 300, GS 430 and LS 430 models immediately.

The Lexus Integrated Phone System for Nokia phones consists of a Nokia-supplied control unit and cradle that is engineered to be installed by the Lexus dealer. The Nokia control unit was designed in conjunction with Lexus to interface with the on-board steering wheel command module or optional touch-screen navigation system. It provides a full wireless communications suite that can be accessed through the existing Lexus user interface.

To use the system, owners of vehicles equipped with the Lexus Integrated Phone System place their Nokia 6310i phone into the hidden center-console-mounted cradle and start the ignition to activate the system. The phone will then transfer its phonebook to the dashboard-integrated color screen. Individual names can be accessed and dialed via touchscreen control on navigation system equipped vehicles. Additionally, up to 20 of these transferred numbers can be assigned a voice tag, allowing users to make calls with voice commands. While the Nokia 6310i phone is in the cradle, it is continuously charged and operates in handsfree mode with audio routed through the speakers of the Lexus sound system.

I bought it, had it installed in my 2003 LS430 Ultra and had it removed and credited. It is a piece of junk! Almost nothing works when the vehicle is in motion. I did a long post by copying a letter sent to Lexus Headquarters N.A. in Torrence, CA.

FORGET IT!

I have a new bluetooth voice activated system en route.

hmorse,

I am assuming you have a Parrot CK3000 coming? If so, I've had mine installed in my GX for about a week now, and am very pleased. I opted for a seperate dedicated speaker setup to avoid the ML audio integration issues/headaches/costs (other than the mute wire), and have had no problems. The audio quality is outstanding, and it does an impressive job with noise cancellation. People think I am in a quiet room, not in a car on the freeway, though I suppose the quietness of the GX cabin has a lot to do with that.

The only complaints I have is that it shipped with 2.41 software, and for full voice functionality (wordspotting) with my T68i I need version 3.0 or better. There are various software updating methods, all of them a pain. I elected to send the box back to the US distributor for updating (for free), so I'll be without for a week or so. Also, the install documentation is very poor, with conflicting wiring diagrams provided.

If anyone else is considering a cellphone hands free solution and has a bluetooth enabled phone, I'd recommend giving the Parrot CK3000 a serious look! You can find them on buy.com among other places.

Tony

Where can I buy such a kit? I have a Tmobile Pocket PC Phone which supports Jabra Headsets. Are they compatible?

I bought my Parrot kit from buy.com

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...119380&loc=111

shopping.yahoo.com reveals a dozen places

http://search.shopping.yahoo.com/sea...?p=ck3000&did=

The company's website is

http://www.say-parrot.com

As for being compatible with a certain model phone, I don't know, but I am sure the answer is on the pages listed above.

Good Luck,
Tony
