Default newbie - with a brake problem

just purchased new to me lexus and need some help / recommendations

2007 gx470 - long story but got it home from texas where i bought it (and had it inspected before I bought it - told all ok) brought home to arkansas (closest lexus dealer is 2 hrs away-but have a local toyota dealer) noticed some inconsistent brake problems on 5 hr drive home - inconsistent soft spongy pedal and sometimes have to push extra hard to brake, etc - nothing consistent - took to local shop and they are trying to figure it out - where the problem is but there not sure yet - still on the rack - 2nd day

meanwhile - went to lexus site and pulled the service record via the VIN (found out i could do this after the fact) and noticed it was serviced by a lexus dealer 3 weeks ago and the then owner - declined a master cylinder repair - recomended by lexus service dept - looks like he sold it and of course didnt tell me - my loss - live and learn - caveat emptor - regardless my problem now

so looks like i'll need some parts - master cylinder - either the complete assymbly, the booster, pump - etc - could piece meal it and hope for the best or simply replace it all at once - who knows best course ?

so the question - best place to get parts ? have seen it range anywhere from 900-2300 dollars

EDIT - CURVE BALL - shop just called and they think it is Brake control module - found some chassis error code
1223

So now 2 shops 2 versions - still 2 grand to fix 😒 so need to find best price on parts

Either way will need some parts

many thanks - for the recommendations and advice

If it is just the master cylinder it is part number 4702560101 for 2007
unfortunately it does show a internet price of about $1000 and it is the same as used on the 4 runners

I have bought master cylinders before for other cars and they are about $100, but looks like on these cars they do run quite high.

It's terrible the last owner sold it to you knowing about the brake issue, and knowing you have a long drive home!

You can try to have someone rebuild it or try to source a used one from another GX or 4Runner.
That's if you trusted the dealer diagnosis and think it is the master cylinder.

Many thanks !!

Trusting the dealership is always a concern- it could be any or all of the components - always just makes u wonder if there gut response is just pull all of the assembly and replace it all or drill down and find the exact issue - but in their defense maybe the best approach - since there maybe some confusion. Where the gremlin is

But my understanding is error code c1223 is pretty vague and just means an abs issue - which could be speed sensor to brake control module

Best place to order parts? Recommendations

Many thanks!!!!

I think if the dealer is confident selling the master cylinder replacement to the previous owner you have got a good lead to replace that part. I would order it from mylparts.com, search the forum for a discount code for this site. Also I received friendly fast services when I called the number on their site too.

Then I would find a shop to install it.. it's a few bolts more than your typical car but doesn't seem to bad.
I wouldn't be too shocked at the price there are many parts ranges $1k-$5k on these cars.

That's again if you believe it is the MC (sound like it might due to pedal getting close to the floor) but it's a big expensive part and we can't diagnose it for you over the internet.

Edit : updated the part number for 2007 GX, I had included the number for 03-04 but that is different from 2007
