Warranty on Used Car Purchase - Higher Mileage
Hi there,
I found the extended warranty information on this site very helpful.
Based on what I read, it's not going to be an option to go through Jerry Johnson for a warranty for a used car we are planning to buy, but I'm wondering if anyone has data points on what we should expect to pay. This is for a 2008 GX 470 with 85,200 miles in Nevada.
Salesperson said the Finance guy told him it would be $4400 for a 3 yr/36K mile warranty. I don't know if there's a deductible or not. We have a deposit on it and plan to go back tomorrow to finish the deal.
Any input would be appreciated!

They are going to add $4400 to the sales price for an extended warranty? That sounds totally outrageous.
On my LS430 i just bought, the Lexus dealer offered me an extended warranty for about $1500 extra. the sub $5000 range just sounds like highway robbery to me

Keep the $4400 for you. Your 08 GX will not spend that much in three years!. In the past 4 and 1/2 years that I own the 04 GX. I did maintenance and repairs myself, all my bills are two O2 sensors, radiator and a battery.

What is a reasonable price?
So what is a fair price for a 2, 3, and 4 year extended warranty on top of a car with this many miles? We ended up driving home with it tonight without any warranty added and before I pulled out of the bay they had the car waiting in, the finance guy came out with the brochure and said to give him a call tomorrow and let him know what price we are looking to pay and that they want us to be happy and think we won't be without coverage. I know, I know. We would like coverage, but at $5K for 4 years (I don't even know how many miles - he lost me at $5K) I was going to bankroll my own repairs.
So if the smart people on this board that have been around the block on this could weigh in, I would appreciate it!
Thanks so much!

did they do the timing belt, thats probably more important than a warranty on a GX470 with 85k on it. my 2003 has 250k on it and is still going strong, It had a radiator changed at 220k, and the timing belt done every 90k. a couple air shocks went out over the course of its life which is proably the priciest bit but nowadays you can just swap to 4runner coils and eliminate the air ride system for much less coin when you have a problem. dont let your transfer case leak and you wont have any issues there.
all that is probably much less than a 4k warranty still. these cars are bulletproof aside from the occasional radiator failure (radiators are cheap), rear air ride problems (cheap to convert to coils), starter (bad location takes like 4 hours labor to get to it but still worst case 1k), smog air pump goes out (cheap to have blocked off), there are other little things like coilpacks going out (My brother keeps a spare coil in his toolkit its fairly common and ridiculously easy to swap out) etc.. but those are the most major things which is not bad compared to alot of cars.
oh and the front diff support arm (the longer one) tends to crack in half on almost every single gx470 with higher miles. every once in a while get under the trucka nd make sure its still in one piece if you have odd clunking that could be it. again not expensive but one of those small things thats known to happen, mine had it replaced at factory once.
I would also see if any of these things are covered by the warranty, sometimes you have a warranty that wont cover everything that goes wrong and thats the part that puts me off warranties entirely, but they do have their place if you can get a good one that covers alot of stuff for the right price, but 5k does not sound like a good deal.

Not worth spending $4k on extended warranty. I must have spent less than half of that on routine maintenance in 4 years of ownership which I'm sure the warranty doesn't even cover.

The issues you'll have with it likely won't be covered by the warranty anyway.
It will probably need a timing belt/water pump and new rear air springs in the near future. Most warranties won't cover those as it falls under maintenance and wear and tear.
Aftermarket warranties not associated with the manufacturer are usually complete junk in my opinion for just about anything. They just tend to be very shady and will battle with you on everything. Setting aside those thousands in a separate bank account is a much better idea.
