2009 GX 470 Rear A/C Question
Had a question about the rear a/c cooling on my 2009 GX 470 - the last few days have been nice enough to warrant using the A/C. I noticed though, that the 4 rear vents seem to not be producing any cool air - kind of a problem when I have an overheated Boxer dog that would love some cool A/C. Any thoughts? I have the rear A/C on, all the way to the - or minus sign and the fan speed to Auto.

There was a TSB released by Lexus to GX customers who are experience a low cooling effect from the A/C system when driving in high temperature areas. But this is general to both Front and Rear AC. You may need to go the dealer to check out if you are under warranty. ( I do not have the TSB number )

If your dog rides in the cargo area often - check the air return vent (it's the one furthest back on the passenger side) for being clogged with dog hair.

Mine had the same thing, and it basically was a symptom of low refrigerant and that it seems to start in the rear vents as far as the decreased cooling performance. I also noticed the compressor was cycling on and off more rapidly.
The dealer never could find the leak, but topped it off, and about 2 years later, it's still blowing ice cold. Yours could be experiencing the same thing. The service advisor seemed to know exactly what was going on when I brought it on, I think it's a common issue on the GX.
The leak is likely where one of the evaporators are, and it's just not cost effective to repair as you would have to tear apart the dash. Even if you had to top it off once a year, it would take decades to before it would costs as much as tearing apart a modern interior. My guess is a refill will usually last several years.
My advice is to got a shop with the right tools and equipment and not refilling yourself. A specialized car AC shop would also be a lot cheaper than a dealer.
BTW, I asked about the TSB when in brought it in, and it was long outside the warranty. The fix prescribed in the TSB was extremely expensive, I don't remember the exact number, but several thousands of dollars.

Rear A/C Cooling Issue
To BradTank - thanks for the info - sounds exactly like what mine is doing. I'll be getting it into the shop for a re-fill.
