Replacement of Trans oil on GX
#18
I have only done this on a GS350, but same procedure. I replaced all 12 quarts, 3 at a time. Ran less than 30 seconds after refilling 3 quarts each time. Shifted through the gears and cut it off. Drained 3 out and filled 3. Repeated until came out cherry red.

Thx, I better get 4 more qts, does it cycle or move the fluid in the pan that fast?

I am planning a 9 qt drain and fill (3 qts 3 times)
Can anyone tell me how long it takes for the new fluid (3qts) to cycle out of the pan, 30 seconds of engine running is correct?
After 3 d/f's I have 1 addl qt to add before putting in checking temp mode
Thx

In between each drain + fill.
It lets the gear changes run the newer fluid run through all the passages.

I'd just run it through all the positions on the gear selector between drain/fills if it were me, leave it up on jackstands till the job is done, and call it a day.

Yes, but my method is safer, and lets the fluid come up to temperature because it's under load.

Dealer Trans Oil Change - so far so good
After several posts and consideration of doing the change myself I decided to have the dealer flush the transmission. It was $500, 5hrs and 17 quarts transmission fluid. The time required was necessitated by the various temperature checks and cool down periods. I have only driven 40 miles of freeway and town driving but I am going to be honest – the car seems more responsive. I drove the car from the dealer and thought the throttle seems more responsive. It was like a tune-up in the old days with new points, plugs and a carb rebuild. I was hesitant to mention this but I will get more miles and see if it is illusionary or actually different. Maybe I just want something for my $500 and if that is so the mind is really remarkable. I went from no way am I am doing this to why did you wait so long?
I called a number of dealers and transmission shops here in Seattle before doing this. I got everything from don’t do it to just drain the transmission. It was surprising how conversant they were about the transmission. I have to say the dealer price in Bellevue set me back at first but then I spoke to the service department and they explained the process they use and the fluid cost. Ok, I got it why it costs what it does – darn it. I am always nervous when something seems to get peppier. It reminds me of the lawn mower that has a spurt just before it runs out of gas and dies.
Now, do I do the shocks? $1,500 of pain or $1,500 of endorphins?

I asked a local Lexus dealer for a quote on replacing the transmission fluid(I was just curious bc I have done and will continue to do all the work on my cars myself) and they told me that these cars do not need to have the fluid changed, "It's a lifetime fluid and even if you wanted to change it you can't bc it's a sealed unit."
I replied, "Huh, that's cool I guess."
