Went to check the power steering level and the cap was open and the level was at hot minimum. Will be topping it off today but doubt this is the cause of the whinging.

It's possible but it could be something else too.....

What was the quality of the fluid left over?
Just wondering if, with the cap off, the pump may have ingested some dirt which might have damaged the pump?
Just a thought... I guess you could always take the belt off the pump, start the truck and see if the whining is still present.

Umm... Yea... thanks
I'm just guessing, but it probably runs:
1. Fan
2. Alternator
3. Water Pump
4. A/C Compressor
5. Power Steering Pump
Pop it off, give your P/S Pump a spin by hand and see if it makes any noise. I've certainly been wrong before, but I don't think it would hurt anything if you ran the engine for a minute or two to see if the whine is gone. Obviously you need to watch the temp. (Others can chime in here if I'm missing something)
If you don't want to do that, maybe an Automotive Stethoscope? You should be able to pick one up at your local Auto Parts store for about 15 bucks or so.
Good luck!

Pretty amazing that Lexus didn't install a heavy duty alternator in this vehicle. I've never had to replace an alternator in any vehicle that I have own except the GX (alternator replaced at 80K miles).

Mine just hit 100k and it does sit pretty low. I live in Chicago also. So salt is a major factor too.
