Default Help rear airbag suspension airbag replacing

I have a 2004 GX470 94k miles

Rear suspension ridding extremely stiff and rough. Took to dealer they want $1200 to replace
airbags.

Has anyone replaced these. Are there any tricky steps to removing the airbags, OEM part are $200 per side. May attempt with some guidance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm gonna go this route... http://www.strutmasters.com/Lexus-GX...gx470-r1-s.htm

probably sooner than later, since I just learned that I can't just replace the front struts with an aftermarket strut, since they are also apparently controlled by the height adjustment system.

Personally I would never remove the airbag and not replace them - I like the leveling suspension, esp handy when you tow.

That said, check the price for parts at Sewelll Lexus parts.com (they are a Club Lexus sponsor). If you register as a CL member you will receive a significant price reduction. Order the bags and have an Indy shop install them for 50% less.

Can you replace shocks with Lexus electronic system and replace air ride bag with coil springs?? This way still get the benefits of suspension setting choice, comfort sport etc but just loose the level control?

I do not see why not, although the downside is one would still lose the leveling suspension feature.

The OEM shocks are the most expensive part between the two, which is what drives people to look for other alternatives i.e. conversion kit.

did you ask the dealer to itemize exactly what needs replacing and why? Riding rough could be:
1) airbags not holding air, so you're riding too low (bump stops). Can you adjust the rear and have it stay there?
2) mis-adjusted rear height. Too high (airbags too stiff) or too low (riding on the bump stops) will both result in harsh ride. Too low is easy to check; crawl under the back of the truck and see if you have a couple inches clearance between the bump stops (on the frame) and the axle. See if the axle is worn clean by the bumpers (they shouldn't touch in normal use).
3) mis-adjusted rear height because height sensors are whacked
4) shocks are wearing out, and getting harsh in their operation (mine did this).

You should, IMO, spend a few minutes debugging what you think the cause is.

2004 Just over 104,000. Had them replaced last month. I cannot find the itemized bill, but it came to ~$1060.
