I know most people are really ****-high over adding cubes when swapping engines, but I am more curious about putting a 1uz in place of the 2uz. I like the all-aluminum construction and 6-bolt mains of the 1uz.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what it entails.

I am pretty sure bellhousings are the same between all the UZ engines so the 1uz should bolt right up to thetransmission. Which would locate the engine so new engine mounts could be made easy enough.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

With that said, I've never read about anyone with a vehicle that came standard with a 2uz swap to a 1uz. More power / torque in the 2uz. I've read tons of post of the opposite swap though....

Can't help on the swap, but you might have better luck researching the reverse swap since it is probably more prevalent. That would at least tell you where the differences lie.

Wanting smaller displacement doesn't surprise me as much as just wanting to get rid of what is considered a very reliable engine in the 2uz. Is there something wrong with your 2uz that is necessitating the replacement?

With our heavy azz GX I'd keep the 2uz since it has a lot more torque unless he's boosting or trying to do an easy(ier) manual swap?

No, nothing wrong with the 2uz. Just getting time to start thinking about rebuilding or replacing the high-mileage powerplant that's in there now. Figure I could mildly build a 1uz on the side, and swap it out with minimal down time. I really like the 6-bolt mains of the 1uz. And the lighter weight. Plus, just putting in another 2uz is boring. Sometimes I make life harder than it has to be just to keep it interesting.

These engines are made for high mileage. There are several 2uz's in 1st gen Tundras that have 500-800K miles and are still going strong w/ the same trans too. Unless you or the previous owner really ragged it out and didn't keep up w/ oil changes etc. there's no need to replace it because of high mileage.

There are a couple things I have always wanted when it comes to vehicles, and oddly enough, Lexus/Toyota makes both of them... a single turbo 2jz for going fast, and an itb 1uz for everything else. As it turns out, the family sized SUV came with a 2uz, and I am not complaining one bit. It just isn't what I have always wanted... but it can be.

And it will be as long as I can convince my better half that a quarter million miles is a legit reason to buy a new engine. Then I can tell her that I will buy a used engine and rebuild it as time and money allows, so that we don't have to do it all at once to the engine already in the car.

You could always build and boost the 2uz.

As the proud owner of both engines, I can tell you one thing:

The GX will be dreadfully lethargic with a 1UZ unless you like revving the be-jesus out of it. Its power band is at a much higher RPM, which would be difficult to utilize with the A750F Transmission.

This. 1UZ is just the wrong tool for the job here. 5.7 i-force swap however...

5.7 swap has been done a few times in 1st gen Tundras, so it is possible.


Boosted 5.7 would be even slicker.

Thank you all for the replies and advice. I do like the 2uz for its early torque delivery. But the idea of boosting the 2uz makes me cringe.

I would want more than 6psi of boost from any f/i system, be it a supercharger or turbo. And there are plenty of accounts of people overclocking the TRD blower with smaller pulleys and blowing the pencil thin 2uz rods through the block. I'm pretty sure that is why Toyota stopped making the 4.7L supercharger.

So, rather than destroying my family rig with unnecessary gadgets, I will just get the ITB's for it and call it good.

With the money I would spend on a supercharger kit for the 2uz, I can buy a SC400. And then I can start tinkering with it without any downtime to the family vehicle.
