Yet other reason to change your own oil
So, just bought 2005 GX a month ago and am very happy with it, it's a great upgrade from my 2008 Tacoma. I've always changed my own oil, and on my Tacoma it was very easy. I use Mobile 1 with a Toyota filter. So even though when I bought my GX they've said they changed fluids with no real description of what fluids, I've been wanting to change to Mobile1. So I finally get the thing up in the air and 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the front engine cover are broke off still in the hole and 2 new holes are tapped using new screws. I guess it's better than nothing. So I get the cover off and now the Toyota filter that's installed is not even the right one. I'm glad I didn't wait any longer. Bottom line is no one is going to take car of your car like you will.

With our 06 4Runner V8 (same setup as the GX for the oil change), I have been using a K&N HP-2009 oil filter (a bit longer than the stock size) and it has a nut on top to make it easy to remove so I don't need to remove any covers. A bit of a pain to get the new filter in there (have small hands), but works like a charm.

Yeah, I was on the way to the Toyota dealer to exchange my two YZZD3's I had for my Tacoma and noticed it was the same one I was going to exchange it for!! Duh. Did you get a socket thing that goes over the end of the filter? If so, what size? Walmart has 3 sizes and I know the small one they have doesn't work and also the large one looks way to big, so I'm wondering if the medium one works?

nope...the socket thing I was never able to get it right and when you switched cars it could be hit or miss so you would have to buy a new one.
someone turned me onto a big wrench, it works for all of my cars as well as other stuff at home so its a better investment.

Yeah, now that you say that a friend of my suggested a rubber strap wrench. That seems like a good idea and like you said could be used for other things.
