sorry to hi-jack this thread but does anyone know if this occurs on the 4runner 18" wheels? I'm on the look out for a set.

kphu,

Here's a link

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/proble...corrosion.html

This is a well known problem effecting Lexus/Toyota vehicles. I heard this directly from two wheel repair specialists.

Sorry for the bad news.

What a poor excuse for wheels. I got rid of mine when they were repainted and it lasted only 1 year. My wife has an 02 GMC Envoy with 96k miles parked right next to my Lexus in our driveway...Same cleaning products are used and obviously same weather. Her wheels are still mint- Not a scratch. Its a defect that should have been recalled, but because it isnt a "safety" item it wont be recalled.

Were they replaced while you were still under warranty, or outside of warranty? I ask because I also have a 2006 GX and the rims are just now starting to get really bad... but I'm at 82K miles, so I assume they'll tell me "too bad".

Done as "goodwill" by dealership/Lexus. Vehicle had under 50K miles at the time and supposedly covered under 4 year/50K mile warranty.

Thanks! Good to know! Perhaps the next time I'm in for service I'll ask about it, but it's unlikely that they'll thow me any bones this late into the game...

I wonder what would happen if all GX owners complained to Lexus about the wheels around the same time. The case by case attitude stinks and should be adressed by Lexus. It is extremely rare to find a GX without the corrosion. I noticed that Infiniti has the same 6 lug diameter on it's QX56's and they have chrome wheels that dont seem to have any problems throughout the northeast. Why dosent the salt bother them?

It's not the salt. It was the process that was used in making the rims. Both Toyota and Lexus vehicles were affected. Easier to say, "Road salt is cause", rather than admit fault.

I have a 2008 GX with 48k miles on it and I had them replace two of my wheels about two months ago and they just replaced the other two a couple weeks ago (which was good b/c two of them were curbed pretty bad from a stupid drift I did in the snow into a hidden curb). The corrosion wasn't that bad but since I was getting close to my warranty expiring I wanted to take care of it. They even threw in a new tire that was goodwilled b/c one of my old original tires wasn't seating properly. The dealer accidentally ordered four wheels this past time even though I only needed two but I didn't think to check my spare tire which has never been used and when I went to put the spare on this past weekend so I had two new tires in the back, I noticed the spare wheel had more corrosion than any of the others so I didn't use the spare. If I would've checked before I could've had the spare replaced. So if you are getting your wheels replaced you may want to check your spare. Fortunately my GX460 I ordered is at the port so my GX470 will be traded in soon so it's no big deal. At least the new owner will have four new wheels.
