Default Steering wheel vibration/shaking on 2004 GX 470 at speeds over 50mph

My GX470 steering wheel shakes/vibrates when I hit speeds over 50mph. What is causing it? Any thoughts?

This may be a dumb question, but have you had the tires rotated and balanced? Or had the alignment checked?

usually a balance issue, maybe you lost some weights?

if you hit a big pot hole recently its possible that your rim is bent. I'd have it balanced first as the others had suggested.

I think there is a TSB and some old threads about this problem
I found some info about 6mos ago.
I was going to take mine in but then it stopped doing it

Correct, there was a TSB specific to 04 model: ST004-04 FEB 04

However, I would first rule out the likely suspects as many mentioned before in that specific order:

1 - check your tire pressure

2 - check your tires for even wear

3 - rebalance your wheels using the Road-force balance

4 - check wheel alignment on both front and rear

You can have your Lexus dealer do that for you. They charged me $20 per tire for Road-force balance; which is actually less than what other shops quoted - $25 if the wheel needs to be remounted.

You can ask your Lexus dealer to match prices, and if they really value you as a customer, they will oblige.

Keep us posted.

Ditto with my 2004 - it's had 3 'spells' and getting the wheels rebalanced didn't help. Last cycle started last fall but right now it's smooth as glass 50 - 70 mph.

Checking your tire balance is still good advice - seems like the logical thing to rule out

My 06 starting this too. Bumpsteer and vibes at 65. Not sure if i should start with tie rod ends, ball joints or bearings. Tires are new and problem is much worse with my much heavier 22's on.

Did you have the bumpsteer and vibration before upsizing?

You may want to look into adding steering stabilizers to counteract the effect of added tire weight onto the steering linkage.

Could be lots of things, but if it only happens when you hit bumps at speed, sounds like a steering linkage problem. If it was tire balance related you would likely feel the vibration all of the time. Start with getting your ball joints checked, then check the tie rods.

Yes, it can be and has been done before. I believe Fab Tech had a kit for RP steering.

But the main question remains unanswered - did you have this problem BEFORE upsizing?

Also, is your rig lifted?
