2007 GX question about sound/shaking
My wife just test drove a 2007 GX470 in great condition with 29k miles on it, but it came with after market rims that the dealer said were 22", when we got in the car to test drive it the faster we went a sound got slightly louder, a repeating sound like "woosh woosh woosh" kind of lol sorry for not a more descriptive sound.....so i said what is that sound and the guy says its like that because of the aftermarket rims, they are heavier and make it louder with the type of rim/tire the wind going in and out and just the weight......or something to that extent he said. regardless of that, the sound wasnt terrible but it had me wondering. So we take it out on the highway and AS SOON as we hit 60mph the steering wheel starts shaking rapidly, not a MPH sooner than 60 though, going 50 its smooth as can be of course....hit 60-65 and she was scared to go any faster.......
any ideas? is it really the aftermarket weight of the rims and the low profile looking tires combination? or is there something wrong with it mechanically? if so what would/could it possibly be?
thanks in advance guys

Its the tires that are making the wooshing sound as they are shot or have a bad cord in them and the shaking is definatly the rims/tire combo out of balance or a rim bent! I would not take that GX till they put stock rims/tires it for you or put on brand new tires of your choice, then balance them and then take it for a test drive!!

ok thanks booyah, any recommendation to make them do fix the problem without putting stock on it? the wife likes the look a lot of the aftermarket ones, perhaps the balance would work? or new tires maybe? but they look to be in good shape

no other way to fix that woosh sound until the tires replaced. If ur wife want it badly, just get the car, sell the rims set and get a stock one. 22' is way too big IMHO anyway.
if you planning to stop by tomorrow, see the tires brand, maybe it will help more. oh...take a picture too

thanks, so the tires are for sure shot? i have a pic of her posing infront of it will load it up for you lol
she likes the look of the rims and the color (black on black) so we could realistically find them in 17s and swap em? and itd be ok? or just the stock will make it sound normal and quiet ?

Looks sweet~ Its most likely the tires BUT it could also be a bad wheel bearing too, which of course would be covered under warranty! I would still have them replace the tires first so that noise is GONE and to make sure thats all it is. I would not take delivery with a Problem present--thats just me!
OR have them take a set of tires/rims off another used GX and then take it for a drive--that may be the simple thing to do at this point and see if all is Quite! If all the noises are gone and the shaking is gone, then you have some bargining room as well--cause you are going to need New tires and 22's are not cheap. If the shaking has dissapered as well I would closely look at the Rims that are off and look for damage and Bent rim!!

Certainly there must a spare tire (stock or not) that each (presumably front) wheel could be tested. I personally think the wheels look nice and any rim or tire can go bad reguardless if it's stock or not, just don't blame it on being non-stock rims. If you like it go for it, reguardless of what other people think!!
