Default Trailer hitch install with photos!!!

Here are the parts I used for my Hitch detail (Class IV 6500lb). Take in mind that my 2004 GX did not have the tow package and needed everything from the relays to the wire harness. Oh, and I wanted this hitch as if it was from the factory.

1. PT22860540 Towing - Hitch Kit – Class IV
2. 8216960050 Towing – Wiring Harness – 7 PIN
3. 8198560020 Relay Box (green)
4. 9098702016 Fuse Box Relay (requires 2)
5. 08925-35870 Center support bracket
6. 52169-60052-B2 Bumper cover (give your color code)
7. unk part # You will need new bumper reinforcement braces.
The factory ones that come on the vehicles w/out
tow package come together at the center where
the Center Support Bracket goes. I am going to
cut mine to work (cut off wheel). You will also
notice that the wiring harness comes with a
mounting bracket and so does the Hitch kit.
Use the mount that comes with the Hitch kit
along with a small cut to the driver side rear
bumper Reinforcement brace (see pics).

That should do it for the total install. I know there are correct bumper reinforcement braces but the cut off wheel made short work of the required changes. As for the bumper cover, I have three of them (see pics) and they are all a tad different color so don't expect it to match exactly.

Hitch on showing the cut braces.

cut out for the wire harness

both braces cut and painted, ready to put back in.

Now make sure you have the correct center support as there are two. The hitch (PT22860540) I ordered called for the 08925-35870 center support. Here are the two different ones side by side. I originally got the wrong one. I do not know the part number of the first one I got but I understand it is for the 20003 and early 04 GXs and the hitch part number PT228-60440.

As you can see the new one on the right shows the mounting holes located more to the rear of the vehicle.

The new one is now on the left showing the part number.

The new center support in now on, ready to put the bumper braces back on. Notice there are two thin spacers that were used in between the center support and the hitch.

Braces installed. In the pics I still need two more silver bolts that were left at Lexology when the hitch was originally installed with the wrong center support. There on now!!

Here is the wire harness cutout.

OOOps I forgot to show pics of the two relays that need to be installed. The green relay box goes in the rear driver side panel. Dang, I think i forgot to get a pic of that one, ill go look. Here are the two fuses installed.

The fuses go under this.

There they are, mine was originally empty. Unless your was prepped for towing it will be empty also.

Thank you!! It’s awesome how the color is so far off. All three different rear hitch covers are all a tad off and the one I needed is the farthest off perfect!! I’m gonna see about getting it color matched. If anyone is going to do this pls feel free to ask questions. If you are (crazy) like me and want it done like the factory, I have done a lot of the question asking and leg work. I have more pics also. Happy towing!!

Exclamation Relay box

Smitty, you've mentioned the relay and fuse box relay, do you know what the costs are for them (approx)? Also, exactly where do you connect the relay box (green)...you mentioned that you were posting a picture of the location, let me know.

1. PT22860540 Towing - Hitch Kit – Class IV
2. 8216960050 Towing – Wiring Harness – 7 PIN
3. 8198560020 Relay Box (green)
4. 9098702016 Fuse Box Relay (requires 2)
5. 08925-35870 Center support bracket
6. 52169-60052-B2 Bumper cover (give your color code)
7. unk part # You will need new bumper reinforcement braces.

Smitty great writeup! I too will need to do this sometimes in the near future...hopefully sooner then later!

Was wondering if you can snap a pic where the wiring harness connects to the vehicle underneath?

Thanks for the great post. It help me with my trailer hitch installation. There seems to be limited information on "How To" for the Lexus GX 470 out on the web.

Great post!

The new center support looks to be what I needed as my OEM hitch wasn't lining up!

Thanks for taking the time and now I'm off to find a rear bumper removal tutorial.

I am installing a tow-hitch on my 2003 GX 740, and I am so glad I found this page. Thanks so much for taking the time to post all the detailed pictures.

I had to buy different part numbers for the green relay box and the fuse box connectors:

1. Green relay box 81985-60020 is discontinued. So, I got a 81985-60021 instead and it works. My Lexus is a Nov 2003, so my vin number said I need 81985-60020, but anyways the 81985-60021 worked.

2. For fuse boxes, I got two 90987-02025 instead of 90987-02016.

BTW: I bought these two parts at mylparts.com (roseville lexus) and they were sooo helpful and patient on the phone. They were the ones who double checked the green relay box replacement for me!

I also bought a new trailer wiring harness since there are just two plugs next to my spare time. On etrailer.com, I found the HM43374 (https://www.etrailer.com/p-HM43374.html) and the plugs fit perfectly with the connectors under my GX 470.

As for the green relay box, I followed the instructions to open the left panel in the trunk (where the jack is) and found just one plug that fit perfectly into the green relay box. Without the green relay box, only the tail lights worked. After connecting that one plug into the green relay box, then my brake lights and turn signals also worked.

I didn't find a screw in the inside wall to hook up the green relay box, so I just shoved it in a tight spot in the jack compartment: I'm hoping the soft carpet/felt thing in the inside of the compartment will keep the green relay box in place.

Thanks again to smitty for all the detailed pictures!!!

Hate to bring up an old thread, however I just ran into this and thought id comment.

Your 04 GX is Silver Pine Metallic in color.. The Tow cover you ordered is Titanium Silver, available on all 2005-2008 models.

Props on the install, that truly looks like factory to me.. I swear if we put both our GXs together no one would be able to tell!
