Default New Sales Tactic?

Has anyone ever had a Lexus salesperson say this about a car that advertised as Lexus Certified Pre-Owned:

"As far as the price I wanted to clarify to you that the advertised price does not include price of certification which is extra if you want the certified pre-owned warranty. I will try to get you discount but please know that this car has been already discounted before we advertised it on line."

I didnot expereince that when I purchased my 2007 RX350. Perhaps that particular car did noot meet their specs to be a CPO and he was trying to sell you a seperate warranty. If so, that was a poor way for him to phrase it.

Also, if they advertised it as certified, then it seems they are legally bound to honor the ad. Was it a Lexus dealer, or some other used car dealer?

I've seen instances where a dealer advertised and stated that a car was inspected and prepped for certification, but the CPO warranty wasn't included in the price. They were clear in their ad that the car was not certified.

This vehicle is listed on both lexus.com/cpo and the dealer's website as "Lexus Certified Pre-Owned" and marked with the Lexus CPO image.

The Carfax for this vehicle says,

"Offered for sale as a Lexus Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle"

Has anyone experience this too?

Let me clarify further...

That's an insult... and completely contradicts the meaning of Certified Pre-Owned.

If a car is listed as Lexus CPO, then it must include the warranty... That's not an optional add-on.

Yea I would venture to say that is against the law, unless they have a footnote at the bottom of the ad in print so fine you can barely read it. If they are not disclosing somewhere in the ad what I consider a disceptive advertising campaign explain to the manager that you are going to report them to the Better Business Bureau and FTC. More bad press is the last thing Toyota needs right now.

Oh, the dealership is not in VA. Let's just say it's within 200 miles of VA. I've contacted other dealers in the 200 miles radius and none of them said, "... does not include price of certification which is extra if you want the certified pre-owned warranty."

What's the big secret? If there is a dealer practicing shady advertising it would be a benefit to this forum and its' members to know which dealer you are talking about.

Good point!

Lexus of Edison

after experiencing this, I found another posting (not here) where another salesperson used that same tactic at this dealership!

While I'm sure there are those that have had good experiences with Edison...if you don't know the facts...you could be screwed!
