Default Question about 2004 GX470 with no dvd system

Hi all! I have a 2004 GX470 that did not come with the factory rear dvd system, but recently a friend of mine got into an accident which left his 05 GX470 totaled. His GX470 came with a factory rear dvd system. Is there any way for me to actually install this??? Is it plug and play like most cars?

Are both vehicles ML/NAV? If so, than yes, although NOT RECOMMENDED - LOTS of work. You will need wire harnesses (multiple) from the '05 and all the pieces (center console dvd, top screen, etc.). Good luck.

The CRT display along with the player have got harness which connects to the NAV system. And there on to the ECM, there is whole gammut of harness which would be required to have them connected, If you have the NAV system, then this is easy, other wise you will end up changing the entire pedestal , re-wiring the Display units with its related connectors and harnesses.

Ok the place you are looking is wrong, as you never had it earlier, now what you need to do is pull out this unit which is like boxy stuff place on the roof where the DVD screen unit is placed. Remove this unit, along with the harness kit. This harness is one unit which has the Radio, Stereo, and the DVD entertainment kit all sleeved into one pack. Get this out from your Friends car, have it set up similar in your car. The Disc changer you have a split from the harness, have this connected at its rear unit. And the otherunit to your existing Nav unit at the Radio/Stereo Receiver Assy.
Now go back to your friend car and pull out the following fuse.
1. Alt Fuse. 2. AM1 Fuse. 3. ACC Cut Relay fuse and Radio Fuse, and have these installed on your Car Fuse box in the Engine Bay.

No go to the NAV unit once on, you will initially get a error - Master Error, dont get scared, go on initialise it . You should have the DTC tool to have it programmed into your ECM, once done, It will give out a series of command Accept all of it and have it registered. There will in the end an option of Quit or Abort, Dont abort, choose Quit on the DTC tool.

Now get to your remote intialised ( Replace the batteries and just on the Remote) Face the remote to the DVD screen and activate the buttons thats it.

Simple there you go.
This is how it works, The Disc player should talk to the Display unit ( this is via the harness, if for any reason they dont communicate, you may have to replace the harness or check of continuity. Then there on the Display assy is activated. Otherwise you should understand they are not in tandem.

For about $250 you can have an aftermarket one installed with a bigger screen and FM modulator to use your stereo system. They have them all over ebay with ceiling mount or headrest. You can also go to a local Audio/video store. Just my 2 cents.
