movin up
prior to the gx, i had a luxurious 1988 suzuki samurai that i got from my boss for free a couple years earlier. it was a great beater4x4 and even came with the handy "smoke screen" option if you depressed the clutch and reved the engine, and it had the oil slick option which was automatically activated wherever you parked. after more than 150k of abuse, the zuki was done.
i had never had any decent suv before the gx, as my family was not well to do, and between my nuclear family of 6, and nearly 40 years in school pursuing my career, there was never any money for anything but the cheapest, or free car.
i needed something with 7passenger capacity, and 4wd with a pending move to the snow covered tundra. i looked at everything that fit this description. i liked the lx better, but could not find a used one at what i though was a reasonable

What car did you come from and why the GX
Original owner of 1999 Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser still drives as perfect as the day I drove it off the lot. It's an amazing vehicle, however after 12 years and 105,000k, I wanted a change.
Over Thanksgiving I stumbled upon a loaded 2004 GX in immaculate condition with 60,000k.
I gave my beloved Land Cruiser to my son who has loved that truck since age 11.
I haven't had enough time to form an opinion on the GX's performance, that's a tough comparison to a Land Cruiser.
I can say the GX is a beautifully designed vehicle and look forward to many years of fun!

My wife has been wanting a GX for about 5 years now... she currently drives a 5sp 97 4Runner. Needlessly to say that she's not in her 20's anymore, and we're ready to make a change, probably later this year. We're planning on keeping the 4R and doing the off road mods.

Just rid of the 2003 BMW 745i Sport Package. Too problematic the 7 series. Just picked an 04 GX 470 with 53k miles. Couldn't be happier. More detail see link below

We needed the third row seating so last month we added an 06 GX with only 46k miles. My wife loved the nautical blue exterior that Lexus offers that is not offered for the Land Cruiser. We're keeping the 89 Land Cruiser with 225k miles.

Prior to the GX we had a 2005 Honda Pilot as the "kid vehicle". I called it the "post partum pilot", bought in a post partum delusional haze. In truth, there were some great things about it:
- the engine was fantastic for a street suv, so was the gearbox.
- dry road handling was pretty good, especially with some basic upgrades
- huge interior space for that size vehicle.
But, there were a couple major flaws for us:
- the AWD system, "on demand" in design, drove us nuts. We're used to the sure footedness of audis, and the pilot's system was nowhere near as good.
- high noise level, especially in crappy/rainy weather.
I would have never considered a lexus before this one. Just notmy thing. But, the 4runner was just a little light on headroom so we went with its cousin the GX. Much to my surprise, I've kept the GX longer than any car I've ever owned (30+ now), and it's probably my favorite. It's an incredibly well built "swiss army knife" of car.

Went from Subaru to a 2004 GX470
My wife and I had a Subaru Impreza wagon, which was fun, but we had a baby and needed more room. My parents were gracious enough to give us their 2004 GX470 and we have been driving it since Thanksgiving 2011. I have always been impressed by the car and in the 119K miles they have owned it there's never been a problem.
I figure if I take real good care of it, it will go for at least another 119K.
Glad to be part of the forum
