Rear Barn Gate From Prado for GX470
Club Lexus,
I am a proud new owner of a 2007 GX470 and was wondering if there are any aftermarket places I can purchase a rear gate which has the spare tire carrier from the Prado and if the rear gates are actually the same as the GX470 rear gates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

itsZep,
Thanks for the quick reply. I am aware of the options which you have eluded to in the picture you have posted, but my question was directed to where I can purchase one of the rear barn door with the spare tire carrier and whether it will fit on the GX. Thanks again for the help.

you could probably mount the tire on to the door. You would need bracket and you would have drill into the door. Not sure why one would want the door mounted on the back

Pagemaster,
Do you know where I can find the detail or schematic for the adapter plate which would bolt directly onto the back gate which appears to be used with the Prado?

I'm not sure about this, but I believe the door itself is different and actually has a "flattened" area on which the spare tire rests. Besides likely needing a new door, and along the lines of what purplehazek4 is saying, you would likely need reinforced hinges. Of course, if the jamb is not strong enough, then the problem is bigger than the strength of the hinges.

One of the biggest problems with this setup is the rear door itself. We own a Prado in Fiji, we use it when we go on vacation there. Anyways, over time the door itself will start weakening meaning it will fall out of alignment and will have problems closing the door due to the weight of the rear tire. And as you know the tire with rim is not light.
I have an 04 GX and i am so glad it doesnt have the rear tire option or else i would have never bought it.

That seems like a very expensive and timely modification to pull off....

darth...I am a "2EachHisOwn" type of guy....so i think people should customize whatever they want, but I am just curious as to why you want to do this? Is it entirely cosmetic?....You just like the look?.....or are there partly other practical reasons too?

Two versions
Hi there,
There are actually two versions of the 5 door Land Cruiser (called Prado in a number of markets)
Over here in France we have the GX and VX versions carrying the spare tire on the rear gate, and the top of the range VXE that stores the spare tire underneath the car:
Because of the weight of the rear tire on a Land Cruiser, I would not recommend modifying it. I'm glad mine is a VXE and hides the spare tire ...

51936C EXTENSION, SPARE WHEEL CARRIER
51936‑60090 GRJ12*, KDJ121, 125, RZJ12*, TRJ12*, VZJ12* 1 $145.77

IMO, the best place to carry a spare tire is anyplace except the back door.
