Default Expensive Day!

30,000 mile service + front brake pads + rotors = $930. There goes the iPod kit I had planned to have installed in the 650i this week!

I have never done any of the "major" service's at the dealer. As a matter of fact, I did my first one at 75,000 miles on an '04, at a local place and paid $140. The mechanic laughed at what I told him lexus charges every 30k miles. I had 98,000 miles on my '04 when I traded it for my '07, and never had one issue. Change your oil, rotate your tires, and don't drive too hard, you will save yourself LOTS of money in the end.

Never understood this.

You buy an expensive car to change just your oil and tires

Then to save you money?

and don't drive too hard
Then you drive it like a pansy!

You make no sense....then you trade it in for another exact model....mmmm

I may be wrong. But long term ownership and proper maintenence will save you the most in the long run.

Interesting point here because when I work on my vehicles I do it for a few reasons; one being I do not trust even Lexus techs (known too many idiot Master Techs); I enjoy doing it (keeps me feeling like I am part of the machinery, and of course number 3 which is I add up in my head what I just saved and then use that money to go buy something for myself.
So, when I did my timing belt in the SC not too long ago I bought a 40D camera which cost about the same (ok, a tad more) than if i had Lexus do it knowing that if I do it things will actually be done correctly. This strange logic actually seems to work with the wifey-I think. Perhaps she just goes with it to shut me up.
This also provides me the motivation I need on those lazy stay in bed days as I lie there pondering what I could purchase if I do those brakes myself. Gets me out of bed each time.

I just paid $240 for 40K mi svc at dealer (w/carwash as usual). I used to work on my own vehicles but not any more. I just don't have the time.

I installed ART slotted, cryo'd rotors and Porterfield R4s carbon/kevlar pads on all 4 wheels on my LX. Price of pads/rotors: $720, labor: $0.

The 30K service on a '04 GX is pretty minimal since the coolant doesn't need to be done nor do the tranny fluid nor the front wheel bearings. You're down to engine oil/oil filter, f/r diff fluids, t-case fluid, air filter, AC filter, tire rotation, and driveshaft lube...maybe $125 for filters & fluids (assuming you buy the filters at the dealer), $150-200 for rotors, $40-50 for pads. You can get most if not all the parts at the Toyota dealer for less.
