A simple way is to insert a penny between the groove. If you see the top of the head, you need new tires.

My GX has 40,000 miles on the odometer. The tire tread's depth averages between 7 and 8 32nds on all four Michelin Cross Terrains. If I subtract 7 from 12, that shows that I have used 5 32nds of tread, therefore I've been getting 8,000 miles per 1/32nd.

If I was to wear down the tires to where the Penny's head would show, which BTW is 3/32nds, I should get a total of about 72,000 miles off of the tires.

Chances are however, that I will get new wheels and tires way before I reach 70,000 miles. I'm looking at the 18" wheels and tires the new 4Runner has.

70k is exactly I got out of my last tires on a RX. Aside from mileage, maintainence of tires (rotation) and driving habits is as important. As a general rule, tires are not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 1/16 of an inch.

Well, in that case, I should get 80,000 miles from the tires.
