Premium in AZ is 91 octane. I've never seen anything at 93. When I lived in Northern California, I belive it was also 91 octane.

Yep, you're right. The GS models have very different engines and will require premium fuel. The compression ratio on both the GS430 and GS300 is 10.5:1 which is high enough to warrant premium fuel in my opinion. With the GX, the compression ratio is much lower at 9.6:1 and can be ran on 87 octane fuel. I hate to assume, but since the LX uses the same engine and has the same compression ratios as the GX, you could also use 87 octane in this vehicle as well. Not that I can afford 12mpg in Texas, let alone like some of you in CA and NY!

I thought the GX engine had a 10.5 compression ratio....where did you get the 9.6 figure?

9.6 might be the 235hp, 03 & 04, 10.5 is probably the VVTi with 270hp for 05

i can't believe that gas prices are rising TOO much this year. it's even the year when i planned on maybe driving cross country to the east coast. although i saw a slightly good impact yesterday when they announced that the price per barrel dropped down $1 , which reflected as ONLY a 2 cents difference! a lot of times, i just think of parking the GX in the garage and instead use my odyssey most of the time. the GX, once it hits half tank, is at least around 10-12 gallons. unlike the odyssey half tank, it's about 7-9 gallons. anyone know when the prices are going down (I'll be happy to see $2 a gallon)???

I called my dealer and he said that 91 will give more HP and better fuel economy. He claims that the GX will work with the regular fuel, but you will suffer in performance. They recommend 91 or better to obtain rated performance.

Your dealer's recommendations regarding fuel economy are opposite from what the majority of us are experiencing. The regular provides better fuel economy. Try it yourself.

I pulled the info from my 2004 Lexus GX470 sales brochure. It gives the data on the 4th page from the back of the brochure where it also discusses horsepower and torque ratings and also body dimensions.

Use AVGAS 100 LL (low-lead)....

As a pilot we use Blue tinted 100 LL in the piston aircraft I fly. I have seen guys come out to the airport with HUGE offshore racing boats.....and fill the tanks with AVGAS for there ultra-high peformance boat engines.....unreal what it costs them....

Anyway, years ago in college when I worked at another small airport as a ramp rat, I used to put 100 LL in the VW Rabbit....the thing would run superb !!

....actually even though it's low-lead....and CAT equiped engine mangement system would choke on AVGAS.....oh yeah...and it's like $4 a gallon

Default What kind of gas? Premium or regular?

Just wondering what kind of gas everyone has been using for their GX 470. Is premium really necessary? Since gas prices are so high, just wondering if anyone has been experimenting. Thx.

Default Oops..

Sorry for the prior rant. Not a good day. But this particular one has been posted 1.6 MILLION times. As an brief FYI - the GX was DESIGNED to run on REGULAR fuel. However the manual DOES state that you "MAY" get better performance (not economy, but "may" get better PERFORMANCE at the COST of poorer fuel economy) should you decide to use premium instead of the RECOMMENDED regular fuel.
