I was wondering this as well. If the engine is identical to the 4-Runner why would it not use the same Octane? Maybe a Lexus image thing (Premimum car = Premimum fuel)?

I have been using regular for mine with no noticeble problems, just finished a 400 mile trip averaging around 17 mpg when averaging 65 MPH. Depending on where I buy gas around me regular runs from $1.60 to $1.78 and premium from $1.80 to $2.10. (Pricing varys by crossing a county line which determines if the gas has MTBE or not included) Makes a difference on a fillup being under or over $30

Default 4Runner

I have the same engine/transmission in my 4Runner, our manual says use regular (87 octane) or you can use premium (at least 91 octane) for increased performance.

If the GX engine has the exact same compression ratio as the 4Runner engine and the 4Runner only calls for regular octane, then regular octane will do just fine in the GX.

it says on the manual that 87 octane is okay but the recommended is 92. i just use 87 because prices here in california go up really high when prices go up.

I have a 2004 and the manual says 87. It sure runs better on 93 though ! Mileage is not good though...

I think in the manual it only recommends 87, but I have always used at least 93. 94 when there is a sunoco

I have always used premium. I don't think it is "required" but they do recommend it in the manual.

I use 87 octane, since that's what is stated in the manual. The truck runs very well on that.

I use 89 (mid-grade) .. I noticed no difference in performance between the 93 and 89 grade.

Forgot to add, the compression ratio of the engine is not suited for premium, it's around 8.1 or 8.7 which is what most engines run with 87 are fine, engines that should get premium are usually 10.1 or even 11
