Default Where's a Good Place to Take the GX Off-Roading?

My GX is my first SUV. It has tons of gizmos for going off-roading, so I'm eager to test them out. I once did a demonstration given by Jeep where they let people go on an off-road demo course. It was A LOT of fun.

I don't want to do a multi-day, camp-outdoors kind of thing. I just want to do a day-trip somewhere on a trail where I don't have to worry about flipping my GX over or puncturing multiple tires, but still have lots of fun coursing challenging (for a beginner) trails. Is there a Lexus off-roading club, or a Land Rover club that allows Lexus tag-alongs?

I figure there must be places not too far from me (Los Angeles) in Southern California (e.g., Mojave Desert, Death Valley) or a little further.

Any ideas anyone?

Where in socal are you?
You can come with me and a group up to Rowher Flats area or some other local spots to test your truck out and learn some offroading.

We keep in mind the value of the truck and don't get into ego trips so it's all sensible off roading. If you are new to it, I highly suggest going with others to learn from and get familar with your vehicle.

PM me if you want to hit up a day on the trails.

Many thanks to GXPrado for taking me on my very first off-road adventure in my new GX.

I'll post some pics here...GX owners should try off-roading sometime....their trucks are more than capable of tackling some pretty tough trails, and it's a lot of fun!

This trail was steeper than it looks...the downhill assist worked great.

I ended up sliding part way into the gorge...thank goodness for the locking center differential and traction control....and thank goodness for good spotters (essential on trips like these)....

et415 was great, I dont think any GX has done what he did! It was fun to see your reaction when the ATRAC took you over that birm.

The only real concern was the running boards, a couple close calls but we kept them clean!

I think some guys from Yotatech are organizing a Big Bear run. Usually they figure out a "2wd friendly" and "4wd friendly" and "hardcore" trails.

Wow...your Hollister Hills trip looked pretty fun, too. Do you go often? I moved from San Francisco to LA a few months ago, and I make it back up there from time to time.

My GX was the only luxury SUV around, too...didn't seem attract too much attention, though. It did get some minor (barely noticeable) pinstriping, but nothing too noticeable, and probably less than one would expect from parking in urban parking lots. I'll try a little ScratchX next time I wash it.

Default Another location for Off-roading

here is another location if you want to go off-roading in socal. You can do a search for "Indian Wells Canyon." There is also a old gold mine if you take a slight detour off the trail. I would not recommend going on this trail without 4 wheel drive. There are small areas of sand and erosion where 4x4 is highly recommended. With that said this is a simple trail. The detour to the gold mine is a more challenging trail (Follow the sign "Cabin"). At the opening to the gold mine you'll need a spotter to help you turn your GX around for your return trip. Here are some pics.

Default End of the Road

Behind the pic. is the entrance to the gold mine. This is where you'll need a spotter to help you turn you car around. In the pic. I have already turn the car around and getting ready to go back down.
