I have an 05 GX470 with 10K miles and I remember the clunking feeling in the beginning when I first bought this vehicle, but I don't remember it now.

I am being optimistic and hoping the engine is learning how I drive and has eliminated this problem on it's own!

I am feeling this clunking now in my 2006 BMW 530xi and reading the threads on this issue, people actually say it's a break in period and your engine will resolve it soon. Who knows?

Oh, and by the way, 9,000 miles on our late build '04 and the clunk just started at the 8,000 mile mark. GX will be one year old next month. I thought for sure we had be spared, but no such luck.

Just bought a 05 GX, it now has about 60 miles on it. I think I have already experience what you guys called the cluck. It almost fell like a down shift. It is so slight that it doesn't bother me at all. Hope it doesn't get worst, other wise, the GX is the best SUV I have ever own.

Coming off a 03 MDX, the GX is a dream. The MDX has alot of these so call characteristic of the vehicle issues. Some of the more common ones are the brake cluck, the sloahing gas tank, a transmission that skips gears and the shifting driver seat.

My 05 with 9,700 miles has been "clunking" for the past 3K miles or so. Its in for 10K service as I type, and I have been told by my service advisor that the problem can't be fixed, at least not now.

Its actually the drive train and there was a service advisory posted at Lexus, not a recall since there is tech nothing wrong with it. They replaced mine, no questions asked. I believe it was in the 03', 04' and early 05', but could be wrong on those years. In my opinion it is not exceptable and I would make them replace it. I have had nothing but the best service from my Lexus dealer.

i know its the drive train. I previously owned an 03 model which, as did most of the production that year, had "The Clunk". The drive train was replaced twice on that vehicle. Each time "The Clunk" went away for a few thousand miles and then came right back. The drive train in my current 05 model is the newer version of the drive train so my service guy says replacing it with the same thing wouldn't do much good. I too get excellent service from my dealership and am awaiting, as are those folks, a satisfactory fix from Toyota. Lets hope on does materialize before the entire model line is revised.

Default The clunk

A close friend of mine went off-roading for a weekend, and the instructor specifically addressed the Toyota clunk. He said it was the Torsen transfer case. Another attendee, a Toyota corporate guy who worked in the 4X4 department, confirmed it. None offered any solution.

I have noticed that my clunk is more pronounced in city driving and non-existant when driving in rural areas. Stop and Go equals Clunk.

I have the clunk in my new-to-me '04 GX470. My neighbor was a test driver for Toyota and now races a GX570 off-road for Lexus (he's won Baja twice) and said he believes it is rubber bushings in the driveline and it is simple to replace. When he gets back from the Baja 500 race this weekend, we'll see if he is right. Nice to have an expert on all things GX right across the street! :-)

Holy cow! This thread is EIGHT years old & was re-started yesterday--UNREAL!

Anyway, the "clunk" is a very well-known & documented problem with the GX. The fix is also well-known: If your GX clunks, you need a new driveshaft, which you can buy from your Lexus dealer. The driveshaft will be replaced under warranty if your GX is still covered by the factory warranty, otherwise it is about $700 installed. Or, buy it and install it yourself.

There's a "sticky" all about the clunk fix at the top of this forum--it's VERY informative--check it out.

Be sure to keep your universal joints well-greased too. I grease ours every time I change the oil & I have the new driveshaft!
