Gas Milage?
Hi All,
I am a new GX owner as of last week...I picked up an 03 with ~12,000 miles on it...At the last fill up I reset the MPG counter and in the last 3-4 days, I am averaging 20.5 MPG...I am shocked to say the least...My 03 v6 MB E320 was only getting 24-25 MPG...What are others on this board averaging?
Thanks,
03BlueGX

If you want to find out real milage, measure the consumption yourself. Generally computer show on the higher side to make you feel better ;-)
Next time you fill up, reset your trip meter A or B. On the subsequent fillup, note how much gas you add and based on the miles driven (Trip meter reading), you know the milage.
My 03 has about 10K miles on it, and I get 16-17 MPG in city and highway mixed driving.

I'm only on the third tank of gas and the computer last read 19.5 MPG but hand calculation says it's really 17.6 MPG. The computer on the ES330 is within two tenths of hand calculated MPG on a consistent basis.

I took a trip to Chicago last week. Checked the mileage on 2 tanks the "old fashioned way" with miles and gallons. First tank was 16.75 MPG, about half 2 lane roads. 2nd tank including 2 days of downtown Chicago driving was 15.62.
Last fall I drove from Ark to Vermont and avg was about 18.
Computer tells me I'm getting 18-19. So deduct 2MPG from the computer reading and you should be about right. My truck is '04 with about 15,000 on it now.

12.5 in Los Angeles city traffic. 17.8 on the road. About 20% less than what the computer claims. My 2001 Denali only got 8.5 in the city and about 16.8 on the road! These are real milage figures. Filling up until it will not take another drop and using the same pump at the same station. Not great milage, but better than I expected. All wheel drive is hell on milage. Skip

Was reading in Motor Trend and they did performance numbers on a Viper, it was slower and had less power on the dyno at 1000 miles compared to later on when they tested it again to see if their was a change at 10k or 20k, the times increased and the HP was like 20 more.

There's definitely a big difference between our 04 GX and our 02 X5 (it's a V6). But the BMW gets about 21-24, while the GX is in the 15-18 range. Much more frequent fillups.
I'm thinking of just using regular instead of premium. I keep hearing that you may sacrifice a little power, potentially a little mileage, but that's it.

I tried switching between 87 and 91 several times. Noticed no difference in mileage. Power is adequate using 87 for my daily commute since I'm not racing nor towing a boat.
Anybody know what could be the disadvantage using 87 for a daily normal driving besides what the manual says performance?

I was just reading a page at autospies.com where they had interviewed one of the Porsche engineers. He was saying that premium wasn't available everywhere so their cars needed to be able to run well on regular. He said if they were "optimized" for premium, then you'd get a little more performance with it, but that's all. Otherwise regular was fine. He also mentioned that putting premium in anything that wasn't "optimized for premium" would do absolutely no good. Some of the cost benefit is offset because premium is more dense than regular, so you might get a few more miles out of a full tank of premium. For me, it's turning out that using regular would save me around $25-$30 per month. Not a ton, but nothing to throw away. And I'm not racing either, I think I've kicked it 3 times in the 6 months I"ve had it to pass someone.
