Default Fix it or trade it? Transmission

Have a 2006 GS300. Started having a clunk and jolt during slowdowns. Dealer says it appears to be the shift solenoid. Have 160K+ miles. Debating on if its time to trade it in or have others fixed theirs and had troublefree miles since repair. Worst case scenario is $5K for a replacement tranny from dealer.

no metal shavings in the oil pan so I decided to fix it. $1300 for both shift solenoids.

Hope I never have a transmission problem, seeing as how I will never ever even approach that kind of mileage given I have around 70,000 miles on my car now and had 58 when I bought it 5+ years ago.

Had the solenoids replaced at the Lexus dealership. After getting the car back, it was still giving a jolt when going into 1st gear. We traded it in today on a Infiniti. Car was super clean but needs a new transmission.

What kind of Infiniti? Any pics?

It's pretty rare to have a bad tranny in a GS. You were one of the lucky ones lol.

Outside of the rough running engine thanks to the carbon issue (which I am bringing into Lexus next week for the engine rebuild to hopefully solve for good) nothing has really gone wrong with the car at all. Other than the carbon stuff - in total I have had one wheel bearing replaced, o2 sensors replaced (tsb), and the recalls. And nothing has gone wrong that has resulted in an out of pocket expense on my part yet... so I have to say while there were some design issues with the engine Lexus is resolving them so for the last 5+ years of ownership I have to say I have been very happy with the car.

If the transmission can go to 160,000 miles without needing any work then I am pretty much in the clear because my car will never see that kind of mileage unless I still have it when my 3 year old son is old enough to drive and it becomes his car lol.

Curious, did you ever have the transmission fluid replaced? First thing I did when I got the car was replace it, and I'm going to replace it again soon - in the US Lexus says you never have to, in Canada, the service schedule dictates replacement every 60K.

No, I always speak in miles on this forum for the benefit of the southerners.

Were they aware of the problem when you traded it?

Yes...it was very obvious when they took it for a test drive.
