2008 GS 460 1UR-FSE Oil Consumption
Was hoping to do a quick poll of any GS 460 owners and their oil consumption. I'm currently at 110K -- owned mine since 20K and just did a change and noticed that I only got 6 qt out of the around 10 I originally put in. I'm using Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 synthetic and always 5K oil changes. Never really spent much time looking at what came out.
Anyways, I assume that since we have an absolutely massive oil pan this level of consumption is expected, else why would the pan be so large (9.5qt with filter) and why would low oil alarm only show when we're slightly less than 5 qt (I experimented!)
Engine runs great, no smoke, nada. I really have no complaints about the car at all since getting rid of the run flats. Just changed the plugs and actually on a 60mi @ 75MPH trip this morning I saw 29mpg!?!
Anyways, looking for some feedback from GS 460/LS 460 owners who actually change their own oil and pay more attention to what comes out than evidently I do!
Halfway thinking about trying some 0w-30 to see what happens.
Thanks

I'm just gonna give you a heads up, and a friendly bump to this thread.
Most folks on here don't own the 460... Only SOME
Most are 350 and 300 owners unfortunately... Us v8 people are KINDA in a small crowd, especially since we're an EXTREMELY rare breed.

I'm guessing since you didn't comment, that you're a GS 430 guy. That also is a fine platform. I had a 2006 GS 300 before this one. It seems that v8's are going the way of the dinosaur.
Anyways, I am pretty confident that the low tension rings used in this engine (to support 0w-20) just cause more oil to be burned. The gents at Toyota knew darn well this would lead to oil consumption so they throw a 9.5 qt pan on it so people won't see low oil during the 5k interval. It would also be interesting to see if they beefed up the catalytic converter as well due to the loss.
The flip side to all of this is why I'm seeing such amazing gas mileage out of a v8 when I don't have a lead foot.
I'll start trending it at my change intervals to see if it gets worse, but, I'm not at all worried about this finding, more an excercise of curiosity.

I'm at 77k miles and haven't noticed any oil consumption. I usually just follow the maintenance minder and get the oil changed at the dealer.
The dealer uses synthetic blend but I'm thinking of going with the Toyota 0w-20 full synthetic going forward. They run about $5.50 per quart if purchased separately.

mine was doing the same thing, its normal, and how the car gets such good mpg with a v8. the Ls460 sec has much more info, since they run the same motor during these years, much better info in those threads

Thanks much for that, I've only ever seen 1 other 460 here in the sf bay area so I'm with you about the rare breed comment.

I see most of your questions were answered. Hope the 460's treating you well! I went for the 430 out of a fluke because I found it on the Lexus lot (was going between a gs350 and a gs300 AWD fully loaded, with everything on it and my fav GFM color). Long story short. I took a test drive and never looked back

Thread from the dead. Well, about a year ago I sold the car. I had quite a conversation with Toyota and the dealership about the car, had the oil testing done and I recall it was 2 quarts or thereabouts in 1000 miles (cannot recall the exact number, but, it was significant). I never saw smoke per se, just some black mist in the rear view every once in awhile under hard acceleration, I did all of the maint work myself, so I know it was done to schedule. Just unlucky I guess.
I ended up getting rid of the car and got a Tesla. I'm quite happy with it, however, I do miss wrenching on my car, one really doesn't need to do much at all to the tesla.

desighn..so when you change oil at 6k miles, you have no oil missing on the dipstick? that would be really rare imho, they didnt put almost 10 quarts in this car for no reason

Most new cars that use 0W20 Synthetic have low tension compression rings to reduce friction and increase efficiency. Mine uses about a quart every 750 miles. The engines get good gas mileage because of the 8 speed transmission and the D4-S injection system. If you look on took of the engine under the cover you would see the direct injection computers.

How can you tell how many quarts are consumed by looking at the dipstick? I put 7qts 500miles ago and will be monitoring the consumption. I brought this car with 3rd party warranty "engine and its lubricating parts" are covered.

From the top dot to the bottom dot is 1 quart. You can tell exactly how much be measuring how much you have to add to get it back to the top dot. I changed my oil three weeks ago and haven't lost any so far. I think the dealer put in cheap oil before I got it.
