Here in South Florida, the new trend is cars that have these roof racks. It looks very cool on some cars. I'll be waiting to see if anyone gets one installed and puts a pic on here.

Some of the older BMW models had little tabs on the roof that could be removed and there were screw mounts for racks already pre-drilled.

Here you go:

Do not recall where I got it from. Was roughly $4-450 I believe (4 q-clips with locks, 2 crossbars, wind fairing). This was my car a little less than 2 years ago, had it on for a year with no issues, in terms of gas mileage and wind noise/drag, hardly noticeable. I used Yakima square attachments, cycling, wintersports, etc. I believe Thule attachments work as well. Otherwise, the system fits secure, does the job.

Default Roof rack on 3gs?

Does anyone use their GS like I am planning to this year? I am thinking about purchasing a Roof rack system to carry 3-4 Mountain Bikes around. I did a search and not much came up for our cars. It seems like the "GO TO" brands are Yakima, and (or) Thule. Thule seems to not have a roof mounted kit available for our generation GS, but what is odd is they carry a kit for the 4GS. Yakima has a kit for our cars that incorporate their "Q Tower" kit with 48 inch load bars....

Does anyone have any pictures, or advice to give? A whole kit seems to run over 900 bucks (Since I want to have 4 bike attachments). I seem to be able to save up to 200 bucks if I piece a kit together myself looking through Craigslist and Ebay.

Please share your ideas/experience!

Also, I forgot to ask if anyone is running a trunk mounted rack? I really want a roof rack, but I am open to the ideas or benefits (if any, other than cost) on using a trunk specific rack.

Just an idea. I put a receiver on my car. Works like a dream, and easy to remove my bike rack. Also having my bike in view using the rear view mirror is peace of mind when driving around with a $4k bike + brothers $4k Cervelo

Here's mine with the Yakima roof rack. I haul 2 bikes but, you might fit 3 bikes. It's secure once you lock it in place and plus you can see it through the sunroof for peace of mind coz having $7k blowing in the wind is pretty scary.

Finally got some decent weather up here in New England, so I went out to visit a friend, and ride around the area. Gave me a chance to test out my roof rack I acquired over the winter!

close up shot of the roof rack.. Yes, I ride a size small Cannondale! Awkward to say the least, because everyone my height (5'11.5) is riding at least a Large lol. I come from a BMX background in the early 90s, so I am used to the feel of the smaller frame. Fits like a glove!

That's an Australian car, the state of New South Wales to be exact.

I've just won a set of these rails on ebay for all of £5GBP.

Personally I much prefer a hitch system for transporting my road bikes.
