Default 2006 GS300 Transmission issue (sort of resolved)

96000 Miles
Very well maintained since 2006.

I've sort of resolved a transmission issue and this may help others, hence the post.

My car was shifting roughly for a few weeks. I know that there is an outstanding recall regarding the engine and assumed this problem was related to the recall. The transmission fluid needed to be changed at 100k miles, so I took it to my Dealer (Stevens Creek) for a tranny service plus a check on the engine recall.

My SA is excellent. They found 3 codes - P0751, P0761 and P0714. They cleared the codes and did a test drive. "Transmission shuddering and intermittent shift operation in 2nd gear". P0761 was recorded again.

They suggested a transmission replacement ($4200). I was upset because
1) The car has been maintained very well since I've owned it.
2) This car's transmission needs service at 100k miles and I was still in time for that service.

Talked to Lexus corporate and they were unsympathetic... which upset me even more. They offered $500 towards repair.

I took it to a very highly recommended transmission specialist (Ron Gates in Sunnyvale). They've seen this before. Recommended a tranny service with them to check if that helps.. it's worked in other cars for them before. They changed the fluid, filter and gasket. I also had them change the rear differential fluid.

I've since put about 100 miles on the car and it has been doing much better. It's not a 100% fixed yet, and there's a chance that a solenoid will need to be replaced on the car. But I want to drive it for a couple thousand miles before making that decision. In any case, it's a much cheaper and safer repair than a tranny replacement.

My advice - get your tranny serviced earlier than what Lexus (or any other manufacturer) recommends. It's a couple hundred bucks, but it's a great investment. Manufacturers and dealers would rather have you get a new tranny than service the original.

Thank you for your contribution! I've been telling and preaching to our members to have their transmission serviced (LATEST) at 90k miles. There's a reason behind that, as the transmission shaves off metal in a normal rate just like every other car.

Another thing I'd like to note to our members, is that these transmissions are made from Aisin. They make various transmissions for other cars too. They even have a TQ rating of how far our transmissions can go (not very far FYI).

Either way, I'm glad you got your transmission serviced! I'd also opt to let everyone know they should do rear diff fluid every 30k miles or so.

Was it full flush or just a drain and fill...I've had the same codes pop up first time around it was P0761 and P2714..I did a drain and fill of 3 quarts..replaced gasket and cleaned out the filter..my car then threw 7 codes..all transmission related, but once I cleared them they were gone for a bit and car started driving normal again..until a few days later and the recurring P0761 and P2714..weird thing for me though is that the check engine indicators would turn off on their own for a day or 2 maybe more and pop back up again. .I'm going to try a full flush before I start replacing solenoids. ..how's your car acting now?

Gears have burrs it's inevitable. This is why I always change my fluid in the first 10 to 15k miles. From then on every 60k regardless of what the manual says. These long service periods are nothing more than a gimmick to convince the buyer and surveys that maintenance on the car is less than brand x. Since most buyers who buy a car new don't keep their car past 100k.
