I went to have my set of Continental ExtremeContact DW replaced after 26k miles. Overall, I really liked them, other than the permanent flat-spotting issue. In retrospect, I should've pumped them to 40 psi when I travel abroad for 6 weeks at a time.

I went in wanting another set of DW since I really liked them. Unfortunately, these tires were apparently on backorder until July-ish. Needing new tires now, I decided to give the Michelin Pilot Super Sport a try, at ~$450 more than what I had planned to spend. The DW were $158/ea, and PSS were $232.

I've only driven on the PSS for about 25 miles so far, but I can already tell that they're very different from the ContiDW. The handling is very crisp and immediate. I think I finally understand what it means to be connected to the road, even though I thought I knew it before. On the other hand, these tires feel harsher and definitely louder at all speed from 25 to 80 mph. There's a low humming background noise that wasn't there with the DW.

The plus side is that PSS comes with 30k mileage warranty, so they should either last that long or I'll get some money back toward the next set. On the other hand, I don't know how I feel about the harsher and louder ride.

I have 30 days if I decide to return these tires, but the DW will still be on backorder and I won't have anything to replace the PSS with. I'll definitely give the PSS a few more days at least. With the long weekend coming up, I'll probably do some mini road-trips to break these in.

Thoughts? Am I being overly sensitive?

Wow, I am the complete opposite. I have the PSS on mine for about 4k miles now, and I think they're incredibly quiet, and smooth. The first set was the Michelin Primary HP, and the second was Michelin Sport Plus. So, I am comparing this set to two other less agressive sets, but yet I feel they're quieter than the predecessors. The only downside I see is these only have a 30k miles warranty, which is 15k less than the SP. I was able to put on 52k (highway) mile on the SP!!!

I haven't tried the other Michelins you mentioned, but from the reviews it seems that the DW is noticeably softer and quieter than the PSS. I think I've gotten more used to the new road noise, and I can definitely appreciate the improved handling. What's still hurting me is the extra $450 spent on these tires.

I have the DW on my ISF wheels on my GS and really love the combination of ride/handling/lack of noise.

My winter-months tires are Michelin Primacy MXV4 or something like that and are just barely more comfortable than the Conti DW set with a fraction of the performance. But thats really not the point of that tire.

The DW is an excellent tire. For their price, it does not surprise me that they are on back-order.

Did you consider the DWS?

Discount Tire / America's Tire told me that the DW is on backorder until July. Lexus of Stevens Creek told me that Continental is discontinuing the DW (hard to believe).

I just read through the Michelin Promise Plan. Looks like even if I want to take those back, I can only exchange for Michelin tires. I guess I'm stuck with the PSS at this point.

Next time around, I'll start hunting down the DW at least a quarter before my tires are out
