Default Gas strut hood supports suddenly failed

One or both of my hood struts have failed and the hood no longer stays up on its own.

It may be due to the colder weather, but regardless I need to replace them.

My dealer wants over $130 for each one including taxes, so if someone could point me to an aftermarket solution (or an equivalent Toyota part or something) that would be much appreciated. I have been looking around since last night and I haven't been able to find anything.

Part numbers are 534400W091 and 534500W071 for RHS and LHS, respectively.

much cheaper on mylexparts. you can get both for the same price the dealer is trying to charge you for one.

I had literally no idea we got a discount. I'll just do this then. Thanks!

Go to any auto parts store and ask a lot of times they can match it up to your strut. But if sewell is 59 I would jump on that. You may be able to get away with just buying one, you can take off one side and right away you should be able to tell which is the busted one.

Cold weather will definitely highlight a weak support strut. My Suburban rear lift works great all summer long then the first cold morning I drop it on my head.... :-)

Definitely order from Sewell. Good idea above to see if one is worse than the other if you only want to spend the money on one now.

Cheers

i was washing my 07 GS today

and discovered the hood won't stay up either. Unless you really push it to its max open position. Even so, a slight jolt will slam the hood shut.

interesting. Such a seldom used thing can fail like this.
