^I agree, it's perfectly okay to jack a car up from it's diff.

Not always. I just did the brakes on a Cayman, and Porsche says very specifically NOT to use the differential housing. Most Lexus/Toyota vehicles are good with the differential and crossmember. The LFA cannot be lifted this way - there are three pages of instructions for safely lifting the LFA.

Here's the GS information:

so...I completed this rear diff drain/refill today and things went off without a hitch. I do have a question though...

i dropped the old fluid into a catch pan and then poured it from the pan into a pre-marked clear milk jug that had already been marked off in quarts (1, 2, 3, etc)...in order to measure what came out. The best I can tell...I took out approximately 1.59 qts (51 oz). From measuring what new fluid was left over, it seems i've added 1.68 qts (54 oz). Now, with a little very minor spillage (going in) and a very little left in the catch pan, and then into the measuring container which throws off the ACTUAL dropped/added fluid...I should still be very close. My question....is it possible to over fill the diff?? The drain plug hole is on the upper SIDE of the diff (not the very top)...so I assumed once fluid starting dripping out...I was good to go. My car was level..or at least VERY close (maybe 1/2 off from front to back). How could I have put IN more than I took out?? I don't want issues.

Thanks for the write up. I am going to change mine when the weather warms up a bit. By the way did you change the oil for the front differential as well? The front ones is hard to get to according to the service manual. I might just let the dealer do it since they are only asking $89 for it.

Smile Rear End differential change

I bought the gear oil and jack stands and due for lack of time I took it to my regular shop and gave him the gear oil and 3 quarts for the transmission for my 2007 GS 350.
Surprisingly he only charged me $50. Runs strong despite the almost 200,000 miles.

Did you have the car level when filling the diff? The diff holds a bit less than 1.5 quarts, so if they were 1 quart/1 liter bottles the fluid should've started trickling out of the fill hole about halfway through the second bottle

EDIT: Just noticed you have a 450h. The manual I have is for the 350/460 and doesn't mention 450h differential capacity, so you may want to check your manual. I can't think of a reason why the 450h diff would have a different fluid capacity, especially since the 350 and 460 use the same diff, but best to check and be sure
