You know, I thought the same thing... Looks like a 3GS ripoff.

Imitation is flattery?

Well if 4 wheels and 4 doors is all it takes to be considered as a look-alike, then sure.
Otherwise, it's as close to being a clone as sheep are to ducks, once you've stopped squinting at the rear lights area and chrome door trim.
That rear quarter reminds me of something Volvo did back in 2000/1 with the S60, and this is Chevy's interpretation with a modern day twist.

Have any of you actually seen one of these on the street?

Swap the license plate to the trunk... fill in the bumper.

You guys need to take another look. There are a LOT of similarities.

Why should we care either way?

You don't have to care. If you don't want to discuss it, don't post.

So, in order to make it look like a 3GS's rear end, we have to start modifying the bumper and bootlid, and reposition the licence plate and remove the reflector/reposition the 3rd brake light?
What about the rear window, since the Chevy's is flush with the quarter panel?
And then there's the light cluster - that'll need changing too.

May I suggest that one retires to a darkened room, and looks up the definition of oxymoronic.

As I said above, if you squint hard enough, sure it has some slightly reminiscent aspects.

I was an automotive design engineer for years.

Just because it it not a carbon copy does not mean that the design was not benchmarked or heavily influenced by the 3GS (or others for that matter).

One should consider looking at the CC and CLS for a quick lesson in design study. But one would likely have to squint too hard.

Maybe see an optometrist first?

I am majorly upset over this Malibu looking like my GS. Next time I see one on the road, I am issuing a severe verbal tongue-thrashing upon the owner.
