Default Nav upgrade

Other then updated street information, are there any beneficial reasons to upgrade the nav software of my 2007 GS350? I believe the upgrade path stops with the nav offered in the 2009 GS.

I have an 08 but my nav disc is from 2011. I think it changes some of the functions, not possitive because it was installed as I bought it. But I believe it takes away the confirmation when the safety message pops up.

Thanks for your input. Dealer told me because of a hardware change starting with the 2010 GS, I can only upgrade thru an '09 version. Nevertheless, I hope others will chime in.

your dealerships don't know what they are talking about. you have gen5 nav and dvd updates still there every year

but yes, it's mainly just map and poi info updates

So nav software fvom a 2011 GS (generation 6) will install and work on my 2007 GS (generation 5)? Doesn't make sense or why would they differentiate generation numbers?

no that's not correct. 07-09 are gen5, they have specific gen5 nav dvd updates for gen5 cars, and they release it every year

2010-2012 are gen6, and they have their different system and updates. it's hdd based and it's done with usb key and then software from dealerships. you can't even get a "dvd" for gen6 and pop it in for updates

same with gen4 system (like 06 gs), they have their own generation of dvd and they do have updates even last year

Now I'm a bit more confused.

So...I can update my 2007 GS with a generation 5 nav system (used as late as for the 2009 MY). The latest update though could be as recent as this year BUT must be on a DVD for the gen 5 nav. In other words, the gen 5 nav software still gets an annual update even though it can only be installed in 2007-2009 GS models.

correct. you are confusing between the nav system version with the nav dvd version.

06 gen4
07-09 gen5
10-12 gen6

gen4/5/6 is the navigation hardware / firmware. they have different interface, hardware requirements, harnesses, etc...

for the navigation software (dvd / usb / dealership), they are designated as v6.1, 7.1, 8.1, 9.1, 10.1, etc... as i mentioned, they are mainly map data update, with firmware updates specific for each generation of nav.

so you will have dvd 7.1, one for 06 and one for 07-09. and then you have 10.1, one for 06, one for 07-09, one for 10-12

I just upgraded my wife's 07 GS350 NAV maps, and upgraded my 09 GS350 maps.

Got updated maps, but the most noticeable improvement is not having to press I AGREE every time (as mentioned earlier in this thread). That alone is worth it, in my book. Definitely recommend upgrading your maps on an 07'.

Maybe I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but the "I agree" button pushing doesn't annoy me.
Of course, wish the new Gen 3 (4 for the US cars) Navi was similarly bestowed with the "be gone" feature, but as it's not, and it's not getting to me (yet!), I can live with it.
