Default Question about Sub/Amp Upgrade for 2008 GS350 with ML

Hi All,

I am new to this forum and could not find exactly what I was looking for. I just got an 08 GS350 with Mark Levinson.

The ML sounds solid, but I am a huge music guy and want it to sound even cleaner.

I am debating between putting in a 12 inch Rockford sub and 600 Watt SSL Amp (from my Accord that I bought Dec 2009), or buying new equipment such as JL Audio which I hear is pretty good.

Anyone know what the ideal upgrades would be? I don't want the bass to be vibrating from outside, but I want it to sound clean. How good would my old stuff sound in my GS?

Thanks so much

I had an 07 350 but totaled that and now have a 08 350. I had a JL W6 12" with and JL 500/1 amp and it sounded perfect to me. Not too much, but enough bass. Only thing lacking and with all setups is the limited bass tuning options of the OEM deck. I also had the Vaistech ML+ ipod interface, which is worth every penny IMO. I also had this box, http://www.mysosinc.com/box_lex_GS.html, perfect flush look with the trunk and you get to conserve all the space!

I have a 10 in jl w7 in a wedge with a jl 500/1. I would say its the best setup out there.

The wedge is very very hard to get in the trunk. I also had my friend shave off 1/2 in on both sides of the box so it would fit in the back section of the trunk. He also rewrapped or for me.

I am still able to fit 2 carry on luggage in the trunk

wowzers thats big, but im sure ported (specifically the wedge) makes a big difference, I got the 10in JL w7 in a sealed box + 1000watt alpine mrp m1000, it can really bump, but i can tone it down when necessary. Went with sealed because i def didnt want to fill up the whole trunk, but looking back, i wish i got the 4080 sub enclosure to save even more space.

Thanks for the replies.

So, I assume nobody thinks my used 12 in Rockford sub and SSL Amp would be any good in the GS?

It's all personal preference. The w7 will give you nice low clean base. I also like it because the base doesn't travel far. All of it says with the cabin of the car.

I went with the Soundstream Stealth 13BX. Fits the 3GS book PERFECTLY! 1inch space at the top and at the sides.

Which amp are you using and does the sub hit hard?

The Soundstream stealth box was not as hard punching as I hoped it to be. My previous experience with a Cerwin Vega ported box punches much louder and harder. However, the stealth box makes compromise because of the size of the box. With my old ported box, I had to sacrifice some bootspace. With the soundstream, You would not even notice that it is there. I hid the amp on the opposite end of our stock ML system so everything is very "factory" like.

What it does well is it extends the low range frequencies that was cutoff from our stock systems. You will hear noticeable differences with songs with deep bass.

No pics required from me (because I'm just too lazy to take one). Just imagine your current back of the backseat, extend 4 inches into the boot. Length and breath will fit with little room to spare. Will look almost factory except for that big tarantula picture.

you've a huge music guy but you've "heard" JL is some pretty good stuff, eh? I had the 4080 enclosure with a 12w6v2 and a JL 1000/1 amp in my 2IS. It sounds very clean, especially if you plan on running components. You always want to overpower your sub to have more control. It didn't sound nearly as good as my 2x 12w6v2 in my 2GS, but it is definitely CLEAN. I'm running the same setup in my car right now and it's on point

Are you after overall sound quality? Best of the best, dynaudio. Bar none. Drop out the crappy stock ML speakers.

hey guys,

The JL W6-7 is out of my budget. You think I can get by with a 12 inch W3 with comparible amp? Looking for more bass and clean sound.

The guy at my store in SJ suggested I also remove the stock sub and create airflow into the cabin....but it would be an extra 700 for labor and the customized ported box. I'd go for two 10's but I rally need trunk space.

Thanks in advance,
Darren

If you just picked up an 08 gs350, why is a W7 out of budget? Youre only talking a few hundred more after spending 30K on the car. Go with what works and you be the most happy. Wouldnt the dual 10's' be more expensive then the single JL?

Ultimately, your decision of course, but just my 2 cents.
