Ok... after doing a lil bit of research, I see other older models have suffered this problem, on occassion. My car does it every so often... gears 4,5, and 6 sometimes don't work because the car won't shift past 3rd, or sometimes 4th...
this is annoying as hell that a Lexus would have these kind of problems,... the car does have 161k miles on it, but nonetheless, seems rather disappointing.
Does anyone in the Houston area know a tranny specialist that would feel comfortable working on a newer model lex, and capable of replacing the solenoids??
Does anyone know where to get them?
What did you end up doing? I have the same problem.
It seems like too many people in the US took Lexus seriously when they said don't change the transmission fluid... you really have to wonder what the reasoning is when Lexus Canada says change it every 60K miles. And yes, you certainly can change it I have already changed mine once and will do it again soon. It costs so little that I really see no reason not to have it done far more often than even Lexus Canada says. I think I paid Toyota like $60 last time.
I ended up buying a new transmission.... and from Lexus, I was told this is a sealed system, so was not to be a transmission fluid change.
The only thing sealed about it is that there is no dipstick. Technically, it still has a drain/fill plug and I certainly have had mine changed and honestly does anybody really believe any automotive fluid will last forever, like 150,000 miles+? Even if it still lubricates, it's going to get dirty and collect crud from transmission wearing down.
As usual, a manufacturer's definition of "lifetime" is an arbitrary number that is usually far shorter than how long us, the consumer, would actually like something to last.
