Clean installation, but with LE using mostly hand-held laser these days, all your detector is doing is telling you when to reach for your DL and insurance.

not necessarily, most cops run radar in city settings. And they are not allowed to use laser when it is raining so there are times when a radar comes in handy. Of course my radar is supplemented with a pair of laser interceptors up front to protect me from those sneaky bike cops.

Laser is perfect for urban areas. You can pick a car out of a pack from 1000ft. There is still alot of radar out there because of budget reasons. Lasers aren't cheap.

You are correct concerning rain, not too many cops like to stand in the rain along side a busy street. But do you really want to speed in the rain?

some highly review audio shop could wire my V1 above the rear view mirror for $40, does it sound reasonable or too cheap to be true? it always seems like a lot of work to me.. i plan to have them wire a dash cam while they are at it

My local car audio shop charges $90/hour, and hardwiring an RD and a dash cam is 15 minutes work, tops. You be the judge.

It is a 10 minute job if you wire it to the switched power source coming off the mirror.

If you trust them, $40 doesn't seem too bad.
