Default windshield replacement

If i were to replace my windshield, would it have to be with a lexus factory windshield if i wanted to keep the rain-sensoring wiping? i have a couple of nicks in my current windshield that have been treated but they are still very visible and are annoying. if i have to replace it with lexus factory, how much does it go for? would an aftermarket product not work with the sensoring technology?

The Lexus windshield with mouldings is going to run about $1000 plus installation. You also will need a new rain sensing kit. It basically is a new pad that goes between the rain sensor and the windshield. There are aftermarket windshields that have similar tint that are a fraction the cost. It comes down to whether you want to spend the extra money for the exact replacement with the Lexus logo. Most people if it is covered by insurance, do get the Lexus replacement. I have a local franchise windshield with a new rain sensor kit and it has been like the original. I paid $600 total.

Safelite did my RX350 windshield replacement in September. They did an exellent job. They used their brand glass and Lexus gelpad for the rain sensor. For the RX I paid $265 installed, so I didn't even have my insurance company involved. Installing the Lexus OEM glass (made by PPG) was $1000 more.

265 is a great deal. somehow i had this misconception that i HAD TO get lexus factory windshield if i wanted to retain the rain sensing technology. this is good to know for future reference.

i actually have safelight coming out tomorrow to fix the scratch which is fully covered under insurance since it's the size of a coin.

with all this snow and ice still on the roads, i am suspecting there are lots of gravel and rocks and other debris all flying all over the place. while driving my suv the other day i got hit by a larger piece of rock but haven't seen any scratches on the windshield yet.

I just wonder if there can be quality differences. Could some glass be thicker to help deaden sound or would thicker glass be more dangerous in an accident?
