Default 2010 GS 350 Radar Detector Install?

Hello,
For those of you who have a 2009 or 2010 GS 350.....can you hot wire the Radar detector into the back of the rearview mirror? If not, what is the next easiest solution. I have a Valentine One and I'm not too much of an electrician. Any help would be appreciated!

If someone has some links with instructions, that would be GREAT!

Thanks,
Mark

i didn't do it in my gs, but i am pretty sure it's doable. your mirror already has a power wire that's on with ignition and that's a perfect wire for you to tap on. that's what i did on my old gs400 and is300

Yes you can, I have my radar connected there. I do not recall the wire color but there is a source to use I will check and see if I have any pics or the PDF of the wires.

none of the pics i have show the wire colors clear enough. The wire harness you need is right behind this cover.....

Where exactly is this wire harness located in the picture above? I have only had the car for 1 day and I'm still trying to figure out where everything is....

Thanks,

I have also debated by wiring through the mirror, but after all I have decided to wire the Valentine through the cigarete lighter. I keep the radar detector by the right side of the mirror. The cable is routed to the right around the window, then behind the glove compartment and then to cigarete lighter. I have also installed the Concealed Display which I have mounted inside the ash tray. What is nice about that location is that I can close the lid and nobody see it that I have anything installed.

I am pretty experienced with radar although I haven't hardwired into fusebox on GS.

1) There is no simple way to hard-wire into the GS since the mirror doesn't have an exposed power cord like the IS250, Infiniti and Toyota mirrors do. If you can open up the housing, you should see a power connector to the mirror. It is like a white jack with eight wire slots on the back, of which 3 or 4 may be used. Test which one has 12v power with a volt meter, and then tap that with a stealthcord or an invisicord.

2) Best buy will hardwire it into the fuse box for you for $40. You could do yourself as well. it will require a longer cord, go along the trim, down the pillar, and into the footwell.

This is assuming you are talking about a windshield mount for the radar itself.

BTW I have some tips for you - since you are in Arizona, cameras are a significant threat. The Valentine One is not good at picking up either cameras, or photoradar vans. So be careful of those.

Most of my Arizona friends would augment the Valentine One with either a Cheetah C50 or a Cheetah Mirror. The Cheetah C50 will warn you of cameras. The Cheetah Mirror slides on top of the existing mirror (replacing it) and will give you both camera and Valentine One alerts in the mirror. It is very stealth. It can also mutes radar warnings if you are below speed limit which is useful if you want to use that feature.

Generally I would recommend a Passport 9500ix or a 9500ci which combine the camera features, with a top notch radar detector in one unit. The 9500ci also has laser shifters to provide genuine protection against laser (RDs just tell you that you have been hit which is usually too late).

BTW the best V1 install is to hide the unit in the rear center headrest, use a remote switch and use the Cheetah mirror for the alerts - effectively a fully stealth install.

Here are pics of my setup.

i wouldn't try to open up the mirror to access the wire, as mike showed just take off that panel and access the wires from tehre would be a good idea

I just ran mine across my headliner, pillar, under my steering wheel column, to a source tapped to my cigarette lighter. Everything is flush.

Are most of you using the suction cups to mount the V1 beside the rearview mirror, or are you mounting it some place else? Does any vendors make a bracket to attach to the rear view mirror?

There is a great thread on the IS-F forum with plenty of pictures and options to attach it to the rear view mirror: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...the-radar.html

I just hardwired mine in the other night. Ive got a 2007 GS350 and it took me about 30 mins total to install my passport 8500. the way I did mine was that I dropped down plastic cover as shown in the above pic along with the sunglass holder. it is held in by 2 screws that you have to remove when you open up the sunglass holder itself. once you have the screws off, than you can just pull down on the entire map light / sunroof control unit. if you are sitting in the driver's seat and you look up, there should be a white wiring harness that has about 4 or 5 wires in it. its basically the wiring loom that comes from the rear view mirror itself. the white harness is held to the roof support of the vehicle by a white clip and is located on the left hand side of the opening. i unplugged that harness and pulled it away from the roof support. once you have done that than you've got the wires that go into the main loom. those wires should be solid pink, solid red, white/black and maybe a solid gray. in any case, white/black is your ground wire and solid red is your ignition wire. i tapped into the red wire for power and used an existing threaded bolt hole to ground. hope this helps! im not sure if the wiring
is different than the 2010 model.

one great post, awesome and thank you! that sounds like a very similar setup to what i had on my gs400 and is300.

Great info by BlitzIS350. I had done the same thing with mine. I followed some advice in the similar IS350 thread. Here is another related thread. There are some pics of my installed setup in that thread.

It looks like you can see the radar detector easily from outside the car, but that is just a camera effect, in reality the tint at the top of the windshield hides it pretty well... Well enough that when I got pulled over for crossing a solid white line (not even illegal), the cop didn't even notice my radar- or just said nothing about it. If he had given me a ticket I would have fought it in court, but I think he realized I knew the law and he gave me a written warning...

I found out you do not need to remove that hole unit. My picture with that cover off is all you need and it will prevent taking the full unit down. I installed mine my self and learned after I removed everything that I did not need to. When and if I need to access it I just remove the cover now.

If you go with the V1 then here is my thread and my set up.
Custom V1

My set up is "similar" to another member with the custom escort set up. I personally did not care for the 9500 as I had it for ~3 mos and went back to V1. The best feature is the red light camera which is growing in IL and many other states. Where I drive I have no need for this. I also installed mine myself and saved a lot of money compared to having someone install for me. I have no issues with anything. I get full radar detection from all sides of the car including laser and nothing is visible.
