Default HELP-Conflicting info on 17 to 18" rim/tire swap on AWD GS350

As some of you know, I soon take delivery of an AWD GS350 that will have the stock 17 rims/tires on it, which I'd like to swap for the 18" GS430 (5-spoke) rims/tires.

When I emailed the dealership about the swap they replied with the following:

DEALER QUOTE "As for the GS430 18 inch, they will not work on the all wheel drive. Shop foreman states "the 18's will rub, because the front struts are mounted different in the all wheel drive than in rear wheel drive". They tried it on another customers GS and found this out."

I've talked to a couple other dealers who say it's no problem, and I know others of you are running these 430 rims/tires on your 350's, so was it as simple as replacing one tire/rim with the other, or did you have to mod the suspension? Please help clear up the confusion here.

And one more thing, I was also told that the Tire Pressure Sensor in the 17" rim won't work in the 18" rim, is that true? I've been quoted anywhere from $128 to $150 per sensor ($512-$600 for a full set), which just blew me away. Any suggestions on picking up sensors for less greenbacks?

Thanks everyone.

I think your dealer might be quite wrong on all that stuff. I have a GS300 awd with the GS430 wheels, and they run perfectly. I bought my 18 inch wheels from someone else on CL with the Tire pressure monitor built in. I am selling off my standard 17 inch wheels with the TP monitor to another CL member. It does not RUB at ALL. THere are many other people who are putting 19-20 inch wheels on their GS300 AWD.

In short, your dealer is wrong. The OEM 18's fit fine on the GS350 AWD and so do the tire sensors.

Sgt - Just so I'm clear, are you also saying a sensor on a17" stock rim will fit the 18" stock rim? Sorry to be so **** about this stuff, but when different dealers give you different answers you soon become skeptical about everything.

And I know you told me earlier that you were running these rims on your AWD 350, but I just needed to be sure you didn't have to mod it.

Thanks

I actually swapped out the stock 17's for the 18" Tourmalines and am using the sensors from the 17's on the 18's now without a problem.

Ok,this is all new to me,so,please bear with me.I am thinking of installing the GS430 rims on my 2006 GD300. I have to change sensors which are on the rim?Is that correct? Is it difficult and can I do it myself?

Oh no no no, you should just buy the GS430 wheels on Clublexus Classifieds, there are many people whom are selling fresh new GS430 wheels from their car with the Tire Pressure Monitor allready built in. That is the best way to go. Or else by the wheels from Sewell Lexus/Parts, I think they have the TP monitors built in.
