1000 mile break-in on a new engine? That's not a factory spec.
They key to a new engine isn't to baby it, or do all the fancy things they say about break-in, its judt to do the first oil change well before the stated interval. Modern pistons/piston rings are machined and assembled to interference tolerances so they'll seal properly, but aside from that, everything else is ready to rumble (cylinder cross-hatching, valve tolerances, bearings, etc.)
You should see these engines on the test circle at a powertrain plant. QC team members will plug in the engine and run it to full throttle and back for 7-8 seconds to check that everything was installed properly, and he/she can tell almost immediately if there's some sort of problem. And that's less than 30 minutes after the engine is built, and sometimes days before it even goes INTO a car, let alone seeing a customer.
