Does anybody have a problem with the voice recognition system? I acknowledge some accent ( Slovak) but my accent is not so profound that it should cause problems. However the navigation system should not show “ski resorts” when prompting for “home”. I will visit my dealer and test the voice command system in 2 – 3 different cars (it could be my accent after all ).

as it requires two steps and that increases the chances of error. Hit the Destination key and push the home switch in the bottom left hand corner. Voice Command can take some practice also. Press the voice switch and release and wait for the beep. Then say the command "Italian Food." " System is showing Italian Restaurant Icons. " This could take three or four keystrokes on the screen so the voice command method is more efficient. Quick access One, two, three etc. can be preprogrammed for your favorite five destinations. Go into Menu, My Places, Register, fill in the screen, pick an icon and set attribute to one through five. The advantage of the Home key and the Quick Access destinations is that they remain active while moving. Emergency also is always active. Say "Help" and your voice command list is displayed. Pick a few and practice until you and the Nav system are one. Then you can use them when you need them. Cinema, Ice Cream Parlor, Thai Food, and Casino are fun to try.....

On the Map screen at the bottom you need to hit Mapview, POI, List All Categories, and Italian Restaurants. Are you in LA? If you are you will get a treat. Zoom the Map all the way in until you see Building Info. Touch the screen until the target is over one of the buildings and hit the building info button. Now it will list the businesses inside and if you pick one it will give you the phone number of that business.

Also at the top of the Destination screen there is a switch for page 2/2. On page 2 you can enter in a business phone number and many times the destination will come up on the screen. It has about 10,000,000 million listings. The system has about 6 million Points of Interest.

The problem is the voice recognition system. The system does not recognize my damn accent!? The “favorite understanding” of the voice recognition system is “Ski resort”! If the system does not recognize the speech it should respond with “System does not recognize this command, please rephrase your command” ( page 108 of the navigation manual). Regardless of how bad my accent might be ( not so bad) it should not give me a “ski resort” or “Thai restaurant” response when asking for “home”. I should point that sometimes it does work and sometimes it does not.

I have the same problem. As a matter of fact it displayed ski resorts when I said Home. Or maybe my son tried the command but either way we are Native Californians, no accents here so I don't think that is the problem.

Voice recognition is just not that great.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometime it acts up on me too. If I'm demonstrating it to a customer and it gets it wrong five times in a row boy does my face get red. Sorry, I forgot to tell you that it's not your accent. The key strokes are faster for things like Home and Quick Access anyway so keep practicing and try Zoom in, Zoom out, Heading Up, Detour, and just Map. Sometimes when it prompts me to say Yes/No and I respond in the positive it replies System is showing Gas Station Icons! Yes? Gas? They are close enough to get confused. Don't give up and keep trying, OK?

I have a funny experience with the vocie nav.

I was in the car with my son (in from college) test driving it and the salesman went away for a sec. We joked about the nav system. I said "launch photon torpedos" and it replied with Toyota dealers. Then he hit the talk button and said something a little odd to the tune of "I gotta take a ..." and the Lexus hit the nail on the head responding "System is showing Gas Station Icons"

Was that done on purpose by Lexus? Or just since it sounds like gas station?

I absolutely agree with you guys. For some reason the NAV system LOVES "ski resorts"

When me and my wife were there to buy the car naturally we took it for a test drive...the Salesman was with us and we were testing out the Voice NAV system. Well it was NOT working that great and kept on going to SKI RESORTS or some other crap like "POI OFF?????!!!..Any i got frustrated and for kicks said "SCREW YOU" the system stated what else but SKI RESORTS!!! lol

One more thing in our AZ trip last weekend me and my wife cracked up when the VOICE NAv system told us to "please lower your voice" when i said "DVD ON" that was hilarious

Same here... I thought it was my native New Jersey Accent??

All the technology - you think they would have had a "learn" control to allow the system to "learn" the operators speach, as used in computer voice recognition.

i don't know but on my sc430 (same nav system) the voice work pretty darn well...

oh and i am asian, not sure about my accent though, i can't tell if i have any)

OK, probably been said already by someone...but...

ROCKVILLE ROCKS! we're damn lucky to have this guy in the forum! i cut 'n paste a lot of the things he writes in here...especially while i'm trying to decide what to order on a new GS. like today, i'm saving his advice on how to handle voice recog. [altho' i'm still using an '05 RX nav system, i'm gonna try his suggestions to see if i can 'train' mine to recognize my southern drawl a little more...tired of getting POI crap when all i want is a damn ZOOM OUT hehe.]

i swear, this guy knows his stuff and obviously studies everything he can get his hands on. it's like we have a factory rep online with us. sure wish MY Lex salespeople had his savvy and product knowledge.

anyway, whatever anybody asks or comments or gripes about, i'll always wait to see what Rockville sez before i draw any conclusions.
