Well I too hope they are lit. If not, they can improve that. Othewise, this is more Lexus genuis at work. Instead of cluttering the dash with more and more buttons, hide the ones used the least.
It probably is cheaper to build the dash too, without these cutouts for the controls.

Lexus/Toyota does cut costs but in ingenuis ways. Not obvious methods.
